From one classroom in Brookline, Massachusetts in 1976, Facing History & Ourselves has become a global organization with a network of hundreds of thousands of middle and secondary school educators reaching millions of students worldwide. We help educators prepare students to participate in civic life—using intellect, empathy, ethics, and choice to stand up to bigotry and hate in their own lives, communities, and schools. Facing History uses a unique approach that integrates civics, equity, and social-emotional learning (SEL) into core academic content. When Facing History pedagogy and curriculum are integrated into the classroom, educators provide opportunities for students to develop SEL and civic skills and dispositions, including tolerance and empathy, the ability to communicate across difference, a capacity for ethical reflection, a commitment to the common good, and a belief that each person's choices and actions matter, all of which prepare students to be informed, thoughtful, and productive individuals.
