Mission

The mission of Native Plant Trust is to conserve and promote the region's native plants to ensure healthy, biologically diverse landscapes.

About

Conservation - In April, Native Plant Trust was among the first small group of organizations worldwide to receive advanced conservation practitioner accreditation by London-based Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI), which included an endorsement by an international advisory council representing six continents. We continued an important project to restore the vegetation of the summit of Cadillac Mountain in Acadia National Park, which is the highest point along the North Atlantic seaboard. This multi-year project for the National Park Service is testing techniques that can be applied to other damaged or at-risk mountaintop sites. Our award-winning Go Botany website, which enables people to identify all 3,500 plants on the New England landscape, reached milestones of 4.7 million users and 20.8 million page views, including 1.3 million users and 4.9 million page views this year. We made substantial progress on the intensive effort to collect the seeds from 3,300 populations of the region's 389 rare and endangered plants for permanent conservation in the seed bank and for use in projects to enhance their viability on the landscape. Staff and volunteers collected seed from more than 100 species at 160 sites in all six states. Seed bank volunteers donated 470 hours to cleaning and processing seeds for storage. In total, trained volunteers gave more than 28,000 hours to the regional plant conservation program this year. This includes professional botanists who review data and set conservation priorities, plus field volunteers who monitor the status of rare and endangered plants, collect seed, and undertake management to benefit rare plants. We continued work on 4 restoration projects with rare species, including augmenting populations of a plant that exists nowhere else in the world but 3 sites along the Connecticut River. We also completed state-wide surveys for a federally-listed endangered species recently rediscovered after last being seen in 1962, 2 surveys and management plans for 3 regionally-rare species, 1 invasive plant control project, and vegetation management for native seed mixes used in erosion control on major roads in Massachusetts.
