Mission

Cristosal is a human rights organization based in El Salvador working to strengthen assistance and protection options for victims of violence in the region through rights-based programming, research, and learning.

About

The Human Rights Research and Learning ProgramThe Cristosal Center for Research and Learning promotes learning and publishes knowledge of human development and security within a human rights framework. Our goal is to build meaningful solutions by identifying and elevating the voices of actors from a number of vulnerable groups including prisoners, members of the LGBT community, and Central American asylum-seekers.We also host intercultural Global School seminars in El Salvador. The Global School creates opportunities for community, religious, student and professional leaders from different cultural backgrounds to engage with one another and learn together how to promote and defend human rights through the lens of Salvadoran experience.Rights-Based Community Development ProgramThis program makes it possible for families forcibly displaced by violence to reclaim their life plan in safe communities. We also work to mitigate the deepest roots of forced displacement by building environments in which all people can exercise their human rights. Our approach to community development addresses both a victim's immediate need to be integrated into a safe community, and the long-term structural need for the creation of community environments that honor human rights.Victim Advocacy ProgramThis program has unique capability to provide holistic direct legal, humanitarian, psychosocial assistance to victims of generalized violence, human rights violations and force displacement. This assists hundreds of Central Americans in the NTCA (Northern Triangle of Central America) providing immediate and life-saving protection and shelter, access justice and social services necessary to rebuild their lives. The program takes a learning approach and seeks to develop new and innovative assistance models based on emerging needs that can be shared with other state and civil society organizations to strengthen victim assistance capacities in the region.Strategic LitigationOur strategic litigation program uses lawsuits in emblematic cases at the national and international level to advance processes for structural change to advance human rights and promote accountability. The Strategic Litigation Program supports transitional justice in El Salvador in the prosecution of the 1981 El Mozote massacre, one of the largest unprosecuted war crimes in the world, and the 1982 El Calabozo massacre. The program also has a mandate to litigate emblematic contemporary human rights cases in Central America's Triangle.
