LEJ promotes ecological health, environmental stewardship, and community development in Southeast San Francisco by creating urban greening, eco-literacy, community stewardship and workforce development opportunities that directly engage and support local residents in securing a healthier future. Our vision of a more just and healthy future for Southeast San Francisco not only involves only our organizations, but others who are like-minded as well. Literacy for Environmental Justice (LEJ) appreciates the opportunity to provide information about recent accomplishments. LEJ continues to refine and expand service learning opportunities through environmental-based programming for underserved youth and our Communities.LEJ has grown and sustained our annual revenues from native plant sales and service contracts to over $200,000 per year. -Demand for LEJ's homegrown native plants and services exceeds our physical capacity. In order to meet current and projected demand LEJ has secured funding and contracts to in the next 2 years to:1. Double our current native plant nursery footprint and install a shade house that will help to triple our annual plant production,2. Obtain most of the additional materials, tools, & supplies needed to boost nursery production proportionately,3. Produce and install 40,000-50,000 native plants for habitat stewardship at the Candlestick Point State Recreation Area (CPSRA) and other local open spaces.Highlights from our 2017-18 fiscal year include:1. Producing over 15,000 native plants for local open space restoration projects2. Engaging over 700 volunteers in the stewardship of local parks3. Employing and training 22 local disadvantage transitional aged youth, 11 high school age youth and 11 college interns in leadership development and community stewardship4. Sustaining new environmental education programs at Candlestick Point State Recreation serving over 500 youth 5. Though the collective accomplishments above, 35 acres of local open space was restored and or stewarded through our programs6. Facilitating a multi-year 70,000 plant contract to support 7 acres of new green infrastructure on Yerba Buena IslandThrough our engagement of community in improving open spaces in fiscal year 2017-18 a balanced, scalable, and sustainable approach of creating multiple benefits to both people and the local environment has been achieved. With the upcoming expansion of nursery and improved programs at Candlestick Point State Recreation Area established, in the next couple years we eagerly look to continue to grow our impact to the community we serve through the development and growth of our effective strategic formula of work force development, green infrastructure, environmental education, and ecological stewardship programs. As we enter our fiscal year 2018-19 we feel a sense of optimism, clarity, growth and direction that is well aligned to the short-term and long-term needs of our changing community and environment.
