In 2018, Portland Trails continued our work on building and maintaining trails, using community volunteers to do much of the work. We choose to engage local residents and employees in order to foster a sense of place and ownership of local natural areas and public spaces. In 2018, we upgraded trails in Virginia Woods and Fore River Sanctuary to reduce recreations impact on surrounding ecosystems. We also upgraded trails throughout the network to improve the cycling experience and reduce the environmental impacts of increasing trail usage.
