Our mission is to provide year-round sports training & athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children & adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and participate in the sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.

Special Olympics Maine conducts several state level competitions annually in 22 Olympic-style sports. Among these are summer and winter games, which are 3-day, 2-night events hosting 1,500 and 500 athletes respectively - regional soccer and basketball events (6 total), equestrian, aquatics, bocce, motor activities, golf, and tennis competitions in various locations around the state. On an annual basis, our program serves over 4,000 different athletes. In addition, there are more than 45 competitive events offered at the local or area level. Our program also offers a statewide comprehensive 'coaches education system' to train volunteer coaches and event volunteers, who in turn, train our athletes in the many sports we offer.
