About

THE GROWING PLACE (ORGANIZATION) WAS ORGANIZED IN SANTA MONICA, CALIFORNIA IN 1985 TO PROVIDE CHILDCARE AND EDUCATION FOR UP TO 86 CHILDREN IN THEIR OCEAN PARK FACILITY. IN SEPTEMBER 2000, THE ORGANIZATION ENTERED INTO AN AGREEMENT WITH THE CITY OF SANTA MONICA TO ACT AS ADMINISTRATOR AND OPERATOR OF THE MARINE PARK CHILD DEVELOPMENT CENTER, LOCATED IN SANTA MONICA. THE ORGANIZATION PROVIDES SERVICES FOR UP TO 137 CHILDREN (BETWEEN ITS TWO CAMPUSES) FROM INFANTHOOD TO KINDERGARTEN AGE, WITH PRIORITY GIVEN TO CHILDREN OF THE CITY OF SANTA MONICA EMPLOYEES AND CHILDREN OF SANTA MONICA RESIDENTS AT ITS MARINE PARK SITE. THE MAJOR SOURCES OF FUNDING FOR THE ORGANIZATION ARE STUDENTS' TUITION AND FEES, AND A CITY OF SANTA MONICA GRANT, WHICH PROVIDES FUNDING SPECIFICALLY FOR THE MARINE PARK SITE. DURING THE YEAR ENDED JULY 31, 2018, THE ORGANIZATION CELEBRATED THE RE-ACCREDITATION FROM THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF YOUNG CHILDREN. THIS COMES AS THE RESULT OF THE TIRELESS WORK DONE BY THE ORGANIZATION'S TEACHERS AND ADMINISTRATORS WHO MUST DEMONSTRATE THE HIGHEST QUALITY OF EARLY EDUCATION TO THE ORGANIZATION'S STUDENTS TO ACHIEVE THIS ACCOMPLISHMENT.IN ADDITION, THE ORGANIZATION OFFERED MANY PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES TO THEIR STAFF. THE ORGANIZATION'S COMMITMENT TO PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT ENABLES THEIR TEACHERS AND STAFF TO PARTICIPATE IN A REFLECTIVE PROCESS OF THEIR MISSION, VALUES, AND GOALS. IN AN INDUSTRY THAT TYPICALLY HAS A TEACHER RETENTION RATE OF 60%, THEY ARE PROUD TO RETAIN 88% OF THEIR TEACHERS; AN INDICATION THAT THEIR TEACHERS LOVE WHAT HAPPENS IN THEIR SCHOOL AND FEEL SUPPORTED IN THEIR ROLE AS EDUCATORS.TOGETHER WITH THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS (BOARD), TEACHERS, ADMINISTRATORS, AND PARENTS FROM EACH CAMPUS, THE ORGANIZATION UNDERTOOK A STRATEGIC PLANNING PROCESS WHICH WILL GUIDE THEM THROUGH THE NEXT THREE TO FIVE YEARS AND ENSURE THAT THEY GROW AND SUSTAIN WHAT THEY LOVE ABOUT THEIR SCHOOL. IN ADDITION, THEIR BOARD WORKED WITH A CONSULTANT TO TAKE A CLOSER LOOK AT HOW THEIR BOARD OPERATES AND IMPLEMENTS PRACTICES AND SYSTEMS THAT REFLECT THE HIGHEST STANDARDS TO PROVIDE GUIDANCE IN THEIR OVERSIGHT.LASTLY, THE ORGANIZATION CELEBRATED THEIR SELECTION AS OPERATORS OF THE SANTA MONICA EARLY CHILDHOOD LAB SCHOOL THROUGH PARTICIPATING IN THE GROUNDBREAKING CEREMONY. THIS LAB SCHOOL WILL FORMALIZE THE MENTORING ROLE THAT THEIR SCHOOLS HAVE PLAYED FOR SMC AND EDUCATORS WHO HAVE STUDIED IN THEIR PROGRAM FOR OVER 30 YEARS. THE ORGANIZATION ENVISIONS AN INSPIRING CENTER WHERE DEEP RELATIONSHIPS WILL FLOURISH, A GENERATION OF CONFIDENT TEACHERS WILL EMERGE AND MEANINGFUL RELATIONSHIPS WILL LEAD TO SIGNIFICANT LEARNING.
