The San Diego Diplomacy Councils (SDDC) mission is to build global relationships and expand mutual understanding by arranging professional, educational and cultural exchanges. We are a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization, one of over 90 nationwide organizations designated by the U.S Department of State to deliver programs and services that allow San Diego to connect and participate in the international sphere and extend its influence around the globe. We connect community, business and youth leaders in the San Diego region with their counterparts around the world to address common challenges including citizen safety, economic opportunity, social justice and environmental sustainability.Our vision is to be a preeminent organization that effectively connects and empowers local and global leaders to create a more peaceful, prosperous and stable world.Some of the highlights of the year included: - In March, The San Diego Diplomacy Council hosted a recipient of the U.S. Secretary of States International Women of Courage (IWOC). Naw Knyaw Paw, a peace activist and General Secretary of the Karen Womens Organization (KWO), an ethnic womens organization of over 60,000 members, supporting gender equality and indigenous peoples rights in Burma, visited San Diego and met with the Karen Organization of San Diego, Survivors of Torture International, the Family Justice Center, and Project Concern International, dinner with local San Diegans, a tour of the Monarch School, a meeting with Nathan Fletcher (Supervisor for the 4th District, SD County Board of Supervisors), and a speaking event, open to the public, at La Jolla Country Day School. - The Diplomacy Begins Here Global Ties U.S. Regional Summit was held on September 20, 2019 in San Diego, California. This years theme was Innovation in the Cali Baja Region and Beyond where participants gained new insight into the challenges and opportunities that are present in this region regarding innovation, exchange, and diplomacy. The Summit was held at the InterContinental Hotel in the heart of downtown San Diego where approximately two hundred and thirty-five participants were in attendance. The Summit also included a tour of the U.S.-Mexico border at Friendship Park and the Cross Border Xpress, which provided greater insight on our border from a human rights, commerce, and security perspective. The Learning Lab portion of the Summit hosted eighty participants and was held on September 19, 2019 at Sempra Energy Corporate Headquarters. The Learning Lab focused on Fundraising and Capacity Building. The weekend concluded with a full-day Gastro Diplomacy Tour to Tijuana, Mexico where participants were able to experience the food and culture of Tijuana like a local. - The San Diego Diplomacy Councils Youth Ambassador program took off with the addition of five educational partners, including La Jolla Country Day School, Francis Parker, Hoover High School, Academy of Our Lady of Peace and High Tech High School. - SDDC conducted 11 events open to the community including our Annual Appreciation Event, an 80;s party to celebrate our 40 th anniversary, three Global Social Hours, a Talk-About Event and a Major Donors dinner.In total, the past year was one of our most successful ever. This past year, we hosted 873 international leaders from more than 148 countries, coordinating over 250,000 professional meetings with 1,500 San Diegans, including 800 students and organized 29 events.
