FOUNDED IN 1972 IN RESPONSE TO PARENTS CONCERNED ABOUT SUBSTANCE USE IN THE LOCAL SCHOOLS, THE MAPLE COUNSELING CENTER (TMCC) HAS GROWN TO BECOME A FULL SERVICE MENTAL HEALTH AGENCY PROVIDING LOW-COST COMPREHENSIVE MENTAL HEALTH COUNSELING FOR PEOPLE IN NEED THROUGHOUT LOS ANGELES COUNTY. SPECIALIZED PROGRAMS ARE OFFERED IN COLLABORATION WITH OTHER ORGANIZATIONS TO BRING TMCC'S EXPERTISE TO COMMUNITIES LACKING BOTH SPECIALIZED EXPERTISE AND RESOURCES. THIS INCLUDES TMCC'S COMMUNITY-BASED EARLY INTERVENTION PRESCHOOL PROJECT. OVER THIS PAST YEAR, TMCC HAS LAUNCHED ITS PROGRAM TO PROVIDE COUNSELING SERVICES TO ADULTS IN LOW INCOME AREAS OF LOS ANGELES COUNTY.TMCC DOES NOT RECEIVE ANY STATE OR FEDERAL FUNDING, AND RELIES ON CONTRIBUTIONS, MUNICIPAL, SCHOOL DISTRICT, AND FOUNDATION FUNDING TO SUPPLEMENT CLIENT FEES, WHICH CONTRIBUTE UP TO 40% OF THE ORGANIZATION'S ANNUAL REVENUE. CLIENT FEES ARE DETERMINED ON A SLIDING SCALE BASED ON ABILITY TO PAY, AND NO ONE IS TURNED AWAY DUE TO LACK OF FUNDS. TMCC REMAINS ONE OF THE FEW MENTAL HEALTH RESOURCES AVAILABLE IN LOS ANGELES COUNTY WHERE PEOPLE CAN PAY WHAT THEY CAN AFFORD, AND ARE ABLE TO RECEIVE SERVICES FOR AS LONG AS THEY NEED.SERVICES ARE PROVIDED TO PEOPLE OF ALL AGES. IN 2018 OVER 80% OF THE CENTER'S HEADQUARTERS CLIENTS WERE BETWEEN 18 AND 62 YEARS OLD, WITH THE YOUNGEST CLIENT BEING 18 MONTHS AND THE OLDEST CLIENT 97 YEARS. TMCC SERVES A PRIMARILY LOW-INCOME POPULATION. IN 2018, 70% OF THE CLIENTS HAD AN ANNUAL INCOME OF $30,000 OR LESS, WITH 43% OF THE CLIENTS HAVING INCOMES UNDER $15,000 A YEAR, AND 20% OF THE CLIENTS HAVING INCOMES UNDER $10,000 A YEAR. IN 2018, OVER 3,500 CLIENTS WERE SERVED IN ALL TMCC PROGRAMS COMBINED, WITH OVER 1,900 CLIENTS RECEIVING COUNSELING AT OUR HEADQUARTERS FACILITY, AND THE REMAINING CLIENTS RECEIVING SERVICES IN SCHOOLS AND COMMUNITY-BASED PROGRAMS. EACH WEEK TMCC PROVIDES SERVICES TO AN AVERAGE OF 525 CLIENTS AT ITS HEADQUARTERS OFFICE. TMCC CURRENTLY HAS 15 PROGRAM STAFF, 14 OF WHOM ARE LICENSED CLINICIANS, WHO SUPERVISE OVER 80 GRADUATE LEVEL INTERNS AND FIVE OLDER ADULT PEER COUNSELORS. IN ADDITION, THE CLINICAL STAFF COORDINATE ALL CLIENT SERVICES AND ALSO OVERSEE THE INTERN TRAINING PROGRAMS AND TRACKS. SERVICES FOR ADULTS INCLUDE A COMPREHENSIVE MENTAL HEALTH PROGRAM OFFERING INDIVIDUAL AND COUPLES COUNSELING, SERVICES FOR OLDER ADULTS, AND SUPPORT GROUPS. PSYCHIATRIC EVALUATION AND FOLLOW-UP ARE AVAILABLE FOR MEDICATION EVALUATION FOR COUNSELING CLIENTS IF IT IS DETERMINED THAT MEDICATION MAY BE EFFECTIVE. IN ADDITION TO COMMUNITY AND SCHOOL BASED PROGRAMS, SPECIALIZED SERVICES ARE OFFERED AT THE CENTER'S HEADQUARTERS LOCATION FOR CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS. SCHOOL-BASED SERVICES ARE PROVIDED THROUGH THE CENTER'S INTERNSHIP PROGRAM AND INCLUDE ONGOING AND DROP-IN COUNSELING AT THE LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL FOR OVER 1,000 STUDENTS ANNUALLY. THE COMMUNITY CIRCLE PROGRAM VOLUNTEERS, 'COMMUNITY CIRCLE LEADERS,' SUPPORT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS TO UNDERSTAND THE IMPORTANCE OF CHARACTER, SELF-WORTH, AND RESPONSIBILITY EACH WEEK IN 50 CLASSROOMS. OVER 250 CHILDREN AND FAMILIES ARE RECEIVING SERVICES AT COMMUNITY-BASED PARTNER ORGANIZATIONS.ALL PROGRAMS, WITH THE EXCEPTION OF PSYCHIATRY SERVICES, ARE SUPPORTED THROUGH A VOLUNTEER SERVICE DELIVERY MODEL. COUNSELING SERVICES ARE PROVIDED BY GRADUATE AND POSTGRADUATE STUDENTS IN PSYCHOLOGY, SOCIAL WORK, AND MARRIAGE AND FAMILY COUNSELING WHO ARE WORKING TOWARD LICENSURE. IN ADDITION TO WEEKLY GROUP SUPERVISION AT TMCC, AN ADDITIONAL 80 OFFSITE VOLUNTEER SUPERVISORS GIVE OF THEIR TIME TO PROVIDE WEEKLY INDIVIDUAL SUPERVISION TO EACH ASSOCIATE AND TRAINEE.
