About

SUSTAINABLE SEAFOOD Conducted scientific research on 16 sustainable seafood projects, feeding a hungry world and restoring depleted fish populations. Aquaculture is a practical solution to renewing regional fish stocks, producing domestic supplies of sustainable seafood, and reducing the need for fresh water to produce terrestrial animal protein as a food source.Several milestones were reached this year in HSWRIs efforts to develop a replenishment program for California halibut. Consistent spawning was seen from the primary group of broodstock maintained on recirculated and temperature-controlled seawater. Controlled experiments to optimize larval survival and quality have resulted in increased survival and the ability to rear tens of thousands of halibut from a single spawning event. A number of projects designed to facilitate the eventual release of hatchery-spawned and reared juveniles into southern California waters were advanced this year, including establishing grow-out rearing units at the HSWRI hatchery in Carlsbad, implementing novel tagging methods (e.g., external marks), and designing release experiments to maximize post-release survival.Finfish nutrition research in collaboration with Oregon State University continued this year, including liposome delivery trials with California yellowtail and California halibut. Additional research on larval nutrition focused on optimizing delivery of the amino acid taurine and vitamin C to yellowtail and halibut. Improving sustainability of aquaculture by minimizing fish oil and fishmeal in diets of farm-raised fish is the goal of another study in California halibut that began this year.HSWRI completed an Investigational New Animal Drug study on California halibut this year to evaluate a medication used to synchronize reproduction in finfish. This research, which is overseen by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, is part of HSWRIs ongoing commitment to animal welfare and replenishment of depleted populations of economically- and ecologically-important fish species off the California coast.
