Mission

Street Roots creates income opportunities for people experiencing homelessness and poverty by producing a newspaper and other media that are catalysts for individual and social change.

About

The award-winning Street Roots newspaper delivers in-depth news and commentary on social, economic and environmental justice issues important to the entire community. Street Roots has honed its expertise on issues of housing and homelessness since its founding in 1999. Our vendor program provides low-barrier income opportunities for people struggling with homelessness and poverty. Street Roots provides means for dignity and hope when sometimes, the options are few. People can walk in off the streets, go through orientation, and begin selling the newspaper, starting with ten free papers. After that, they purchase the papers for a quarter and sell them for a dollar, building professional skills. Our vendor program also builds community for people isolated by poverty, and connects them to social services through our partnerships. More than 800 vendors sold Street Roots in the Portland metropolitan area last year. Street Roots also prints the Rose City Resource guide, the most comprehensive list of services available to folks experiencing homelessness and poverty in Multnomah, Washington and Clackamas counties. The Rose City Resource has been a project of Street Roots for our entire history, beginning as pages of our newspaper, and launched as a stand-alone booklet in 2007, expanding in size and scope as the need has grown.
