THE TOMODACHI INITIATIVE IS A PUBLIC-PRIVATE PARTNERSHIP, LED BY USJC IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE U.S. EMBASSY IN TOKYO WITH SUPPORT BY THE GOVERNMENT OF JAPAN. TOMODACHI INVESTS IN THE NEXT GENERATION OF JAPANESE AND AMERICAN YOUTH THROUGH EDUCATIONAL AND CULTURAL EXCHANGES AND LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS. FINANCIAL SUPPORT IS PROVIDED BY CORPORATIONS, ORGANIZATIONS AND INDIVIDUALS IN THE U.S. AND JAPAN. IN 2012, THE U.S.-JAPAN COUNCIL (JAPAN) WAS CREATED TO SUPPORT THE ADMINISTRATION OF TOMODACHI IN JAPAN. USJC (JAPAN) IS A REGISTERED PUBLIC INTEREST CORPORATION (KOEKI ZAIDAN HOJIN) AND MAINTAINS OFFICES IN TOKYO. IN 2019, TOMODACHI PROGRAM AND EVENT PARTICIPANTS TOTALED 830 YOUNG PEOPLE IN JAPAN AND THE UNITED STATES THROUGH 28 PROGRAMS. SINCE INCEPTION, MORE THAN 8,600 YOUNG PEOPLE HAVE PARTICIPATED IN TOMODACHI PROGRAMS ACROSS MULTIPLE STATES AND PREFECTURESAND OVER 44,100 EVENT AND PROGRAM PARTICIPANTS FROM INCEPTION THROUGH DECEMBER 2019.MAJOR TOMODACHI PROGRAMS SUPPORTED BY USJC (US) IN 2019 INCLUDED:TOMODACHI SUMMER SOFTBANK LEADERSHIP PROGRAM - SINCE 2012, 100 HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS FROM TOHOKU PARTICIPATED IN A 3-WEEK LEADERSHIP PROGRAM AT UC BERKELEY. PARTICIPANTS LEARN ABOUT Y-PLAN (YOUTH, PLAN, ACTION, NOW!), A PROJECT-BASED CIVIC LEARNING EXPERIENCE TO ADDRESS REAL-WORLD PROBLEMS IN THEIR COMMUNITIES. TOMODACHI PRUDENTIAL ALUMNI LEADERSHIP PROGRAM - THIS PROGRAM SUPPORTS AN ALUMNI NETWORK OF TOMODACHI PARTICIPANTS FOLLOWING COMPLETION OF A TOMODACHI PROGRAM. ALUMNI REMAIN CONNECTED TO A COMMUNITY THROUGH REGIONAL NETWORKS, ON-GOING PROGRAMS AND NETWORKING OPPORTUNITIES.TOMODACHI METLIFE WOMEN'S LEADERSHIP PROGRAM - 50 FEMALE JAPANESE UNDERGRADUATES AND 50 JAPANESE MID-LEVEL, CAREERPROFESSIONAL WOMEN ARE PAIRED TO BUILD STRONG MENTOR-MENTEE RELATIONSHIPS OVER TEN-MONTHS. FINAL PRESENTATIONS ARE PREPRED BY TEAMS BASED ON THEIR TRAVEL TO WASHINGTON D.C. AND NEW YORK.TOMODACHI MORGAN STANLEY AMBASSADORS PROGRAM - 12 JAPANESE STUDENTS TRAVEL TO WASHINGTON, D.C., FOR TWO WEEKS WORKING WITH 9 AMERICAN STUDENTS FROM THE WASINGTON CENTER. IN TEAMS THEY LEARN ABOUT CROSS-SECTOR PARTNERSHIPS TO UNDERSTAND THE ROLE OF CIVIL SOCIETY IN THE U.S. AND JAPAN AND CREATE PLANS FOR DEVELOPMENT OF THEIR COMMUNITIES.TOMODACHI KAKEHASHI INOUYE SCHOLARS PROGRAM - THIS PROGRAM PROVIDES 100 JAPANESE STUDENTS AND 100 AMERICAN STUDENTS TO TRAVEL TO AMERICA AND JAPAN FOR A 10-DAY YOUTH EXCHANGE PROGRAM. JAPANESE AND AMERICAN UNIVERSITIES ARE PAIRED FOR THE EXCHANGE. TOMODACHI EMERGING LEADERS PROGRAM (ELP) - ELP IDENTIFIES, CULTIVATES AND EMPOWERS A NEW GENERATION OF JAPANESE AMERICAN LEADERS. 12 LEADERS AGED 24-35 ARE SELECTED ANNUALLY TO ATTEND THE USJC ANNUAL CONFERENCE AND PARTICIPATE IN LEADERSIP EDUCATION TRAINING AND DEVELOP LIFELONG PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL FRIENDSHIPS.
