About this organization
Mission
The center promotes and fosters a public appreciation of the cinematic arts, including the exhibition of educational films and films of independent and/or emerging filmmakers.
About
Exhibition of educational films and films of independent and/or emerging film makers. In 2018 the Avon continued its use of film series as part of its programming to reach out to the community for a more in-depth look at social topics and different movie genres. In 2018 a new series, 'Black Lens', was added to examine the works of black film makers and their use of film to portray the black experience. Examples of other genres and topics are 'Discover Indian Cinema', 'French Cinematheque', and 'Documentary Night'. We also expanded our participation in the Greenwich International Film Festival and focus on French Cinema. To further our educational mission, the Avon provides memberships to over 400 local educators for grades 4 -12 in Fairfield County, CT and Westchester County, NY free of charge. The Avon expanded its annual scholarship program. It awarded a total of $9,000 to twelve local area high school seniors that competed in an essay contest titled 'Why Film Matters.'
