About

The Arizona State Fire Training Committee (ASFTC) has successfully completed the 2018 State Fire School that was held in September. Seven hundred sixty-six (766) students was the initial enrollment. Seven hundred forty-nine (749) completed their classes and received certifications. Seventeen students failed to finish their classes for a variety of reasons. As an example, there were a number of students that were called out for wildland deployments, thus unable to complete their course. The completion ratio for this years fire school was 98%. There were 30 classes offered that provided hands on technical education and classroom. One hundred seventy-six departments were represented at the school. Seventy-six (76) instructors were used to deliver the training. The school enrollment represented a variety of organizations that attended the school. If, however you remove students that represented private fire departments, schools, Indian Nation, and the military 620 students represented the Arizona fire service that were either volunteer, combination, or career. Of that number 40% of the student count (246) were volunteer or from combination departments. Combination departments are those organizations that do not have career firefighters but are volunteer and on call. Of the Arizona Counties Maricopa County had the most students in attendance at 142 which were mostly comprised of career firefighters. Maricopa and Pima accounted for 212 students or 34% of the overall State Fire School attendance. Greenlee County student attendance was 100% volunteer (12).Graham County had the second most volunteers in attendance at 25 students which was 86% of their student attendance (29). Third for volunteer attendance was Yavapai County at 29 which was 54% of their student attendance (54). If you used the combination departments along with the volunteers 74% of their attendance (40 students) made up the group. Cochise County ranked fourth with 55% of the student attendance (47) that were volunteers (26). The data would suggest that 13 of the 15 counties that are outside of Maricopa and Pima County have smaller communities serving populations less than 10,000 are dependent on the State Fire School for their training. This highlights that the ASFTC effort to provide affordable, professional training has been successful. To have the number of student attend and successfully complete the course is a testament the fire school is a worthwhile endeavor and should be supported.rural and small fire departments where training facilities and opportunities are very limited.
