EXHIBITIONS & SITELINES: SITE SANTA FE BEGAN THE YEAR WITH THE OPENING OF CASA TOMADA, THE THIRD IN SITE'S BIENNIAL EXHIBITION SERIES FOCUSED ON CONTEMPORARY ART FROM THE AMERICAS. THE EXHIBITION, CURATED BY A TEAM OF THREE DISTINGUISHED GUEST CURATORS, FEATURED 23 ARTISTS FROM EIGHT COUNTRIES AND INCLUDED TEN NEW COMMISSIONS. THE EXHIBITION PLAYED OFF THE AMBIGUITIES, ADDRESSING THE RECIPROCAL AND COMPLEX RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE ONES WHO STAY AND THE ONES WHO LEAVE, AND THOSE THAT BELONG AND THOSE THAT ARE OUTLIERS.IN THE SPRING, SITE OPENED BEL CANTO: CONTEMPORARY ARTISTS EXPLORE OPERA, A LARGE-SCALE EXHIBITION THAT EXAMINED THEMES OF RACE, GENDER, AND CLASS WITHIN THE STORIES, TRADITIONS, ARCHITECTURE, AND MUSIC OF OPERA. THE EXHIBITION, CURATED BY SITE'S DIRECTOR AND CHIEF CURATOR IRENE HOFMANN, FEATURED THE WORK OF VASCO ARAUJO, SUZANNE BOCANEGRA, CANDIDA HOFER, WILLIAM KENTRIDGE, GUILLERMO KUITCA, YINKA SHONIBARE CBE, MATTHIAS SCHALLER, AND BILL VIOLA.THE FIRST LARGE-SCALE EXHIBITION OF ITS KIND, BEL CANTO ENGAGED OPERA AFICIONADOS AND NOVICES ALIKE, OFFERING UNEXPECTED GLIMPSES BEHIND THE SCENES AND DEEP INTO THE CULTURES AND HISTORIES THAT HAVE INFLUENCED THIS ICONIC ART FORM OVER THE YEARS.COMPLEMENTING BEL CANTO WAS A SERIES OF SMALLER SOLO EXHIBITIONS PRESENTED THROUGHOUT THE YEAR IN OUR SITELAB GALLERY SPACE. THESE SITELAB EXHIBITIONS WERE EACH ON VIEW FOR ABOUT TWO MONTHS AND AS WITH ALL OF OUR SITELAB SHOWS, WERE PRESENTED WITH FREE ADMISSION.
