Mission

Children of Promise, NYC reimagines a just society that values the purpose of every child impacted by mass incarceration and removes barriers to create opportunities for children to thrive and achieve their human potential.

About

AFTER SCHOOL- CHILDREN OF PROMISE, NYC (CPNYC) IS THE FIRST AND ONLY AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAMING NYC THAT IS SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED TO MEET THE INTERESTS, NEEDS AND CONCERNS OF CHILDREN WITH AN INCARCERATED PARENT. RECOGNIZING THE EMOTIONAL TRAUMA AND PROFOUND PSYCHOLOGICAL CONSEQUENCES THAT CHILDREN MAY EXPERIENCE AS A RESULT OF HAVING A PARENT IN PRISON, CPNYC DEVELOPED AN INNOVATIVE MODEL THAT CO-LOCATES A LICENSED MENTAL HEALTH CLINIC AND A COMPREHENSIVE AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM, SEAMLESSLY PROVIDING ACCESS TO THERAPEUTIC SERVICES AND THE BEST PRACTICES OF YOUTH DEVELOPMENT. THROUGH THIS MODEL, MENTAL HEALTH PRACTICES, PERSPECTIVES AND LANGUAGE ARE INFUSED INTO ALL ASPECTS OF PROGRAMMING. CLINICIANS WORK ALONGSIDE AFTER-SCHOOL STAFF TO SUPPORT EACH CHILD AND HOLISTICALLY ADDRESS THEIR NEEDS. ALONG WITH ACADEMICS, THE ARTS, PHYSICAL ACTIVITY AND LEADERSHIP, PARTICIPANTS RECEIVE ONE-TO-ONE, GROUP AND FAMILY THERAPY. THE AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM PROMOTES ACADEMIC MASTERY, PROSOCIAL RELATIONSHIPS, HEALTHY DECISION-MAKING, RESILIENCE AND A POSITIVE FUTURE OUTLOOK SO THAT YOUNG PEOPLE TRAUMATIZED BY INCARCERATION LEAD SAFE, MEANINGFUL AND PRODUCTIVE LIVES. IN 2016, CPNYC SERVED 295 YOUNG PEOPLE IMPACTED BY INCARCERATION AND THEIR FAMILIES WHO LIVE IN BEDFORD-STUYVESANT AND THE SURROUNDING NEIGHBORHOODS IN BROOKLYN.
