In September 2018, JH Wildlife Film Festival partnered with WGBH and hosted the Science Media Awards & Summit in the Hub (SMASH) in Boston, MA. Over 500 entries competed for 21 awards. More than 100 preliminary judges screened more than 1,250 hours to select the finalists. JHWFF, with a grant from the National Science Foundation, sponsored speakers for the summit. The summit had over 300 attendees.
