In 2018, Western Leaders Network (WLN) engaged 200 local officials and tribal elected leaders throughout the West on the following issues: Preserving the BLM Methane Rule, The Greater sage-grouse conservation plans, and Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante national monuments, and advocating for a fully funded EPA budget.WLN released several statements in rapid response to federal rollbacks affecting the above projects and statements opposing BLM's and EPA's separate proposals to repeal methane regulations. WLN encouraged local western governing boards to write pro-methane resolutions and letters to their federal delegations. Durango City Council wrote letters to Rep. Tipton and Senators Bennet and Gardner supporting the BLM Methane Rule. WLN hosted four webinars on local economic diversification and the role of public lands, wildfire mitigation and local land use planning, the local importance of the Land and Water Conservation Fund and Colorado energy.WLN board member, Don Schreiber participated in a fly-in to Washington D.C. in April 2018 to advocate for methane regulations. In September, staff attended a conference in Delta, Colorado on diversifying economies reliant on natural resource extraction. WLN received a grant to hire an Indian Country Organizer, who was hired in December of 2018 and started employment in January of 2019. WLN also hired a part-time grant writer.Several WLN members published op-eds on current conservation issues, including West Wendover, Nevada, Mayor Daniel Corona and Clark County, Nevada, Commissioner Chris Giunchigliani with editorials advocating for strong protections for the greater sage grouse: New Mexico, Mayor Victor Snover promoting federal methane rules; Routt County, Colorado, Commissioner Tim Corrigan supporting the Land and Water Conservation Fund; and San Miguel County, Commissioner Joan May promoting federal methane rules.WLN also began work on a case study report examining four western communities and how they are affected by methane waste and consequent revenue losses.
