PROVIDE HISTORY OF MOUNTAIN FLYING IN THE NORTHERN ROCKIES TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC.

About

This has been one exciting year for the Museum, and one for the record books. We have been featured in countless front page stories, news clips, and headlines nationwide and launched our very own custom beer label. It all began when Missoula was chosen as one of the host cities for the AOPA regional fly-in. Thousands of pilots and aviation fans gathered from across the country to celebrate and show their support for general aviation. It was at this event with the help of Senator Steve Daines the Museum of Mountain Flying made its official announcement to resurrect its famous workhorse and centerpiece of the Museum, a 1944 C-47. The N24320 has been sitting idle in the hanger since 2001 when she was brought to her forever home here in Missoula. Not because we wanted to keep her locked up and grounded, but because the financial obligation to keep an airplane flying goes far beyond just the purchase price. There are many logistical hurdles to tackle, things like insurance, fuel, oil, yearly maintenance and believe it or not...pilots.Along came a truly once in a lifetime opportunity. The Museum was invited to join with a group known as the D-Day Squadron. Together the group of American Flyers and their fleet of C-47s and DC-3s will complete a transatlantic crossing to Duxford, England and on June 5th and 6th, 2019 to recreate in remembrance the American liberation of Normandy, France. The 75th anniversary celebration currently has over 35 registered aircraft worldwide in conjunction with 350 parachutists who have committed to this event. We have a group of local jumpers teaming up with the Museum to create an outstanding demonstration team. Our plan will to be to travel the country, commemorating the great sacrifices and honoring the Montana heroes who have given everything in support for their state, family and country. Those who have served as first responders, wild-land firefighters and military personnel. To make this tremendous opportunity a reality, the Museum needed to stand out, we needed to find a way to make this adventure and our aircraft stand up and be heard. So after careful consideration we decided to honor our community and the people she represents with a simple name that tells who we are and who we represent. So we have christened our famous Johnson Flying Service DC-3 with the name Miss Montana. The name comes from an actual World War II aircraft that was piloted by a decorated war hero from Montana. Our goal and Vision as a Museum is to promote, educate and inspire current and future generations of people and try to generate interest and insight into the world of aviation. We want people to remember Bob Johnson, the legacy he created and the world of back country flying that he pioneered. The pilots he inspired and lives he touched left behind fond memories that are slowly disappearing with the age of time and the people who were involved.
