About

OVER THE PAST YEAR, GRAIL FAMILY SERVICES HAS CONTINUED TO EXPAND OUR REACH AND IMPACT WITHIN THE ALUM ROCK COMMUNITY OF EAST SAN JOSE AND BEYOND. THIS YEAR WE INVESTED SIGNIFICANT RESOURCES INTO STRENGTHENING THREE PROGRAM AREAS: OUR STATE FUNDED PRESCHOOL, OUR BUILDING BLOCKS OF PARENTING APP AND OUR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM FOR TEACHERS. THROUGH STRONG PARTNERSHIPS WITH THE SANTA CLARA COUNTY OFFICE OF EDUCATION AND OTHER SERVICE PROVIDERS, OUR TRAINING ON FAMILY ENGAGEMENT GOT COUNTY-WIDE RECOGNITION AND HAS BEEN ADOPTED BY MANY. SO FAR WE'VE TRAINED OVER 100 TEACHERS THIS YEAR AND OVER 40 STAFF FROM OTHER SERVICE PROVIDERS. THIS YEAR WE STARTED THE REDESIGN OF OUR BUILDING BLOCKS OF PARENTING FAMILY ENGAGEMENT APP, WHICH PROVIDES PARENTS OF YOUNG CHILDREN WITH ANYTIME/ANYWHERE ACCESS TO STRATEGIES AND ACTIVITIES THEY CAN USE WITH THEIR CHILDREN TO DEVELOP A CLOSER RELATIONSHIP AND SUPPORT THEIR SUCCESS IN SCHOOL AND IN LIFE. WE UPGRADED THE APP TO ENHANCE THE USER INTERFACE, ADD MORE CONTENT AND FEATURES, AND CREATE A WAY FOR PARENTS TO CONNECT WITH ONE ANOTHER. THIS PROJECT REQUIRED US HIRING AN OUTSIDE CONSULTANT WHO DEVELOPED A QUALITY PRODUCT THAT WE WILL BE LAUNCHING COUNTY WIDE THIS YEAR. OVER THE PAST 18 YEARS, GFS HAS IDENTIFIED AND ADDRESSED MULTIPLE CRITICAL COMMUNITY NEEDS - EARLY LITERACY, ENGLISH LANGUAGE ACQUISITION, PARENTING SKILLS, ORAL LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT, FAMILY ENGAGEMENT, AND ACCESS TO EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION. WE HAVE ALSO STARTED DEVELOPING AN EARLY MATH INITIATIVE. A 2007 UC IRVINE LONGITUDINAL STUDY FOUND THAT IN A COMPARISON OF MATH, LITERACY, AND SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL SKILLS AT KINDERGARTEN ENTRY, "EARLY MATH CONCEPTS, SUCH AS NUMBERS AND ORDINALITY, WERE THE MOST POWERFUL PREDICTORS OF LATER LEARNING." WORKING WITH STANFORD UNIVERSITY'S DREME (DEVELOPMENT & RESEARCH IN EARLY MATH EDUCATION) NETWORK, WE ARE ADDING EARLY MATH TO ALL OUR CHILD AND FAMILY ENGAGEMENT PROGRAMS. THE DREME NETWORK WAS CREATED IN 2014 TO ADVANCE THE FIELD OF EARLY MATHEMATICS RESEARCH AND IMPROVE YOUNG CHILDREN'S OPPORTUNITIES TO DEVELOP EARLY MATH SKILLS. ALSO, THE DREME NETWORK WILL BE TESTING THEIR EARLY MATH LESSON PLANS WITH OUR PRESCHOOL FAMILIES. ALL THESE PROJECTS THIS YEAR REQUIRED A HIGHER ALLOCATION OF MANAGEMENT. WE INVESTED HIGHER PERCENTAGE OF MANAGEMENT TIME TO ENSURE SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF THE PROJECTS.
