Program Services: 4a: Connecting the Community to Maritime Heritage:The Santa Barbara Maritime Museum (SBMM) receives over 40,000 visitors annually and focuses on interactive exhibits and hands-on educational programming. SBMM exhibits highlight the local maritime history of the California central coast and give visitors and locals a sense of Santa Barbaras rich, thousand-year maritime history. Exhibits honor the people such as commercial divers or lighthouse keepers, who, through everyday actions, enrich our lives today.Permanent exhibits include the First Order Fresnel Lens from Point Conception Lighthouse, Purisima Diving Bell, JIM Diving Suit, Honda Disaster, and Shipwreck of the California Goldrush Steamship Winfield Scott.During the past year SBMM opened several new exhibits, including The History of Oil in the Santa Barbara Channel, Face to Face with the Great Whites, featuring photography by Ralph Clevenger, and Rum Running, Sailors, and Prohibition. During this fiscal year SBMM began planning a major upgrade of its Military Exhibit, scheduled to open in 2020, and worked on two temporary exhibits, Fishing with Paper and Ink, and Mermaids: Myths and Legends.The Museum also held or hosted numerous special events, including the Parade of Lights, Harbor & Seafood Festival Wine Garden, Kardboard Kayak Races, and a Stars & Stripes USO annual fundraiser, honoring the Santa Barbara Navy League and Pierre Claeyssens Veterans Foundation.
