WRITE ON SPORTS (WOS) IS A DISTINCTIVE ALTERNATIVE EDUCATION PROGRAM WHOSE MISSION IS TO INSPIRE MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS TO IMPROVE THEIR WRITING SKILLS BY TAPPING INTO THEIR PASSION FOR SPORTS. THE FOCUS IS PRIMARILY ON DISADVANTAGED STUDENTS.

WRITE ON SPORTS IS A LITERACY PROGRAM THAT TEACHES MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS FROM LOW INCOME COMMUNITIES AND HOMES HOW TO WRITE ABOUT SPORTS AS A WAY TO HELP THEM WRITE. IT USES THE SUBJECT OF SPORTS AND THE TOOLS OF JOURNALISM TO ENGAGE THE STUDENTS. GUEST ATHLETES AND JOURNALISTS HOLD "PRESS CONFERENCES" WITH THE STUDENTS, WHO PREPARE FOR THE GUESTS BY RESEARCHING WHO THEY ARE. THEY ASK QUESTIONS AND BLOG ABOUT THE VISITS. STUDENTS ALSO WRITE FEATURE STORIES AND PRODUCE VIDEOS ON COMPUTERS OVER THE TWO-WEEK PROGRAM. THEY ALSO ATTEND A SPORTS EVENT AND INTERVIEW PLAYERS AND COACHES.WRITE ON SPORTS EXPANDED ITS NUMBER OF PROGRAMS AGAIN DURING 2018 BY ADDING A NEW TWO-WEEK SUMMER CAMP FOR AT-RISK MIDDLE SCHOOL YOUTH IN MORRISTOWN, NEW JERSEY (HELD AT FAIRLEIGH DICKENSON UNIVERSITY). A TOTAL NUMBER OF 241 STUDENTS ATTENDED THE 11 CAMPS; 18 STUDENTS PARTICIPATED IN ONE AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM AND 26 STUDENTS PARTICIPATED IN THREE ONE-DAY WORKSHOPS FOR VETERAN WOS STUDENTS.THE FULL RUNDOWN OF PROGRAMS WAS AS FOLLOWS: 1. FOUR CAMPS UNDER THE FLAGSHIP UMBRELLA, INCLUDED TWO PROGRAMS IN NEWARK - ONE AT ST. BENEDICT'S PREP AND ONE AT THE PRUDENTIAL CENTER, HOSTED BY THE NEW JERSEY DEVILS. 2. ONE CAMP AT MONMOUTH UNIVERSITY FOR THE LONG BRANCH, NEW JERSEY AREA. 3. ONE CAMP AT ROSELLE CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL FOR THE ROSELLE, NEW JERSEY COMMUNITY. 4. ONE CAMP AT GOSHEN COLLEGE, GOSHEN, IN FOR GOSHEN COMMUNITY STUDENTS. 5. TWO CAMPS IN PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND AT PROVIDENCE COLLEGE AND BRYANT UNIVERSITY FOR STUDENTS FROM THE PROVIDENCE AREA. 6. ONE CAMP AT BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT FOR STUDENTS FROM THE CARDINAL SHEENAN CENTER. 7. ONE CAMP AT MORRISTOWN (FAIRLEIGH DICKINSON UNIVERSITY), MOSTLY FOR STUDENTS FROM COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS. 8. IN ADDITION, WRITE ON SPORTS HELD ONE AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM FOR 18 STUDENTS AT THE EDISON MIDDLE SCHOOL IN WEST ORANGE. 9. THREE AFTER-SCHOOL WORKSHOPS HELD AT DIFFERENT LOCATIONS DURING THE YEAR WITH VARIOUS SPORTS TEAMS OR SPORTS EVENTS - YOGI BERRA MUSEUM, NEW JERSEY DEVILS AND A WOMEN'S HOCKEY TEAM.TEACHERS IN THE PROGRAMS INCLUDE EXPERIENCED CERTIFIED TEACHERS AND INTERNS WHO ATTENDED THE WRITE ON SPORTS PROGRAMS IN SEVENTH AND EIGHTH GRADE. TWO ARE HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS, OTHERS ARE NOW COLLEGE STUDENTS.THE CURRICULUM, MORE THAN 100 PAGES, WAS DEVELOPED BY DR. ERIK JACOBSON, ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF LITERACY AT MONTCLIAR STATE UNIVERSITY. HE IS PROGRAM DIRECTOR FOR WRITE ON SPORTS AND OVERSEES THE ACADEMICS. HE ALOS ALSO LEADS THE TWO NEWARK CAMPS. HIS DOCTORATE IS IN LANGUAGE AND LITERACY FROM HARVARD.PARTNERS WITH WRITE ON SPORTS INCLUDE MONTCLAIR STATE UNIVERSITY, THE NEW JERSEY DEVILS, ST. BENEDICT'S PREP, YOGI BERRA MUSEUM AND THE SCHOOL DISTRICTS AND COLLEGES/UNIVERSITIES WHERE THE PROGRAMS ARE HELD.
