About

EXHIBITIONS and PUBLIC PROGRAMS - Lawndales programs provide emerging and mid-career artists working in Houston and the region an opportunity to exhibit new and experimental work outside the commercial system; educate the public about contemporary art; and support artists professional development. Lawndale Art Center's activities for this fiscal year included over twenty group and solo exhibitions, a new mural project, student exhibitions featuring over twenty area schools, dozens of public programs and 3 fundraising events. The estimated participating audience is 24,000 individuals. During the 2014-15 season, Houston-based artist Jonathan Leach installed his mural, entitled Ghost Grid, on Lawndales 3,200 square-foot exterior wall. Exhibitions included a group exhibition of contemporary Texas sculpture organized by Lawndales founder James Surls; in addition to solo exhibitions in a range of media by Houston and Texas-based artists including Ryder Richards, Jed Foronda, Stephanie Patton and S.A. Hinson, among others. Over the summer, Lawndales annual juried exhibition, The Big Show, featured over sixty artists within a 100-mile radius.
