Founded in 1978, Women's Protective Services of Lubbock (WPS) was established as a 501 (c)(3) shelter program for victims of domestic violence and has grown in strength and services over the past 41 years to become the third largest residential shelter in the state of Texas. In 2018-2019, WPS served a total 3,558 adult victims and their children of which 1,831 were unduplicated; WPS hotline coordinator specialists answered 5,896 hotline calls; issued 338 protective order requests; and provided 4,769 social services referrals. 2,725 hours of individual therapy for clients was implemented along with 1,965 hours of group therapy, and 4125 hours of legal advocacy rounded out attorney assistance programs. WPS is the only agency that provides crisis intervention, emergency shelter and support services to battered adult victims and their children in a 10,500 square-mile region. The 12 West Texas counties within the WPS service area include: Bailey, Cochran, Crosby, Dickens, Garza, Hockley, King, Lamb, Lubbock, Lynn, Terry, and Yoakum.
