SPANNING THE IDAHO/MONTANA BORDER, THE SCOTCHMANS ARE ONE OF THE LAST, AND LARGEST, WILD AREAS IN OUR REGION. WE CONDUCT EDUCATION, OUTREACH AND STEWARDSHIP ACTIVITIES TO PRESERVE THE RUGGED, SCENIC AND BIOLOGICALLY DIVERSE 88,000 ACRE SCOTCHMAN PEAKS ROADLESS AREA. WE BELIEVE THE SCOTCHMAN PEAKS DESERVE CONGRESSIONAL DESIGNATION AS WILDERNESS FOR THE BENEFIT AND ENJOYMENT OF CURRENT AND FUTURE GENERATIONS. OUR OUTREACH AND EDUCATION EFFORTS TO PROTECT THE SCOTCHMAN PEAKS FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS THROUGH WILDERNESS DESIGNATION, ONGOING STEWARDSHIP AND EDUCATION HAVE RESULTED IN GROWING OUR SUPPORT, ENGAGEMENT AND SUCCESS AT ACHIEVING IMPORTANT BENCHMARKS. OUR SUPPORT LIST HAS GROWN TO OVER 8,600 INDIVIDUALS, INCLUDING INDIVIDUALS FROM 48 STATES. OVER 80% OF OUR SUPPORTERS ARE FROM THE REGION OF EASTERN WASHINGTON THROUGH NORTHWESTERN MONTANA. IN 2019, WE UPDATED OUR LOGO FOR A CLEAN MORE MODERN LOOK. WE ADOPTED A NEW TAG LINE: SAVE THE WILD SCOTCHMANS AND, GENERALLY, BROUGHT OUR MESSAGES INTO A SHARPER FOCUS AROUND WHY WILDERNESS MATTERS TO MOST PEOPLE. OUR MOST EFFECTIVE FORM OF PRINTED COMMUNICATION REMAINS OUR NEWSLETTER. IT IS PUT OUT 4 TIMES A YEAR AND DISTRIBUTED AT EVENTS AND TO OVER 85 LOCATIONS THROUGHOUT THE REGION FROM SPOKANE TO LIBBY TO MISSOULA AND MANY POINTS IN BETWEEN WE ALSO DISTRIBUTE A WEEKLY EVENTS/UPDATES MESSAGE CALLED THE "INSIDER" VIA EMAIL TO OVER 900 SUBSCRIBERS. BOTH THE PRINT AND EMAIL PUBLICATIONS ARE FREE AND OPEN TO ANYONE WHO WANTS TO RECEIVE THEM. WE CONTINUE TO SEE A SUBSTANTIAL AND GROWING NUMBER OF VISITORS TO OUR WEBSITE, PROVIDING INFORMATION ON THE VALUE OF PRESERVING THE WILDERNESS CHARACTERISTICS OF THE SCOTCHMANS. OUR WEBSITE HAS ALSO BEEN AN EFFECTIVE METHOD OF PROVIDING INFORMATION ON EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES. OUR FACEBOOK PAGE CONTINUES TO GROW IN USE AND PROVIDES AN INTERACTIVE FORUM TO BRING TOGETHER OUR SUPPORTERS AND VOLUNTEERS AND ENGAGE THEM MORE EFFECTIVELY. THROUGH HIKES AND VOLUNTEER STEWARDSHIP ACTIVITIES (TRAIL MAINTENANCE, WILDLIFE STUDIES, BOTANICAL ASSESSMENTS, WEED SURVEYS AND NATURALIST CLASSES) WE CONTINUED TO BRING A LARGE NUMBER OF PEOPLE INTO THE SCOTCHMANS TO IN ALL SEASONS. IN THE WINTER AND SUMMER OF 2019, OVER 170 INDIVIDUALS JOINED US AS VOLUNTEERS ON ONE OF OUR MANY OUTREACH OR STEWARDSHIP PROJECTS. IN ADDITION, OVER 150 PEOPLE PARTICIPATED AS PART OF OUR ORGANIZED HIKES OR PROGRAMS IN THE FIELD OPEN TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC. BEYOND ENGAGING VOLUNTEERS, OUR STEWARDSHIP ACTIVITIES HAVE BENEFITS FOR RESOURCE PROTECTION. IN THE SUMMER OF 2019 WE HIRED A BACKCOUNTRY RANGER/INTERN FOR 10 WEEKS FOR OUR STEWARDSHIP PROJECTS. OUR TRAIL AMBASSADOR PROGRAM WAS MANAGED BY OUR DEPUTY EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, WHO TRAINED AND COORDINATED OVER 30 VOLUNTEERS TO TEACH PEOPLE ABOUT BEST BEHAVIOR AROUND MOUNTAIN GOATS TO AVOID WILDLIFE-HIKER CONFLICTS. OUR HIKING MAP, DISTRIBUTED FREE OF CHARGE, HAS ASSISTED BOTH HIKERS AS WELL AS THOSE WHO SIMPLY WANT MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THE AREA. WE HAVE USED
