ZEROLITTER PROGRAMTHIS PROGRAM INCLUDES YEARLONG INTERNSHIPS AT SEVERAL SCHOOLS AND INSPIRES STUDENTS TO EXPAND THEIR THINKING ABOUT TRASH, LANDFILLS, THE IDEA OF A DISPOSABLE CULTURE, AS WELL AS THEIR OWN CAPACITY TO AFFECT CHANGE AND REDUCE THEIR CAMPUSES' WASTE STREAMS AND ITS IMPACT ON HEALTHY WATERSHEDS. STUDENTS INVESTIGATE THEIR OWNWASTE-MAKING PATTERNS IN SCHOOL AS WELL AS LITTERING BEHAVIORS IN PUBLIC SPACES USING COMPUTER TABLETS AND A SPECIAL MAPPING APPLICATION ZEROLITTER.ORG. IN 2018-19 WE CONDUCTED MULTIPLE LITTER IN 10 HIGH SCHOOLS IN 2 COUNTIES, ALAMEDA AND CONTRA COSTA WORKING WITH 3,500 STUDENTS. STUDENTS REMOVED AND CLASSIFIED OVER 140,000 PIECES OF LITTER. THE PROGRAM EMPLOYED 28 INTERNS.RESTORATION ACTION PROGRAMTHE RESTORATION ACTION PROGRAM (SWAT) INCLUDES YEAR LONG AFTER-SCHOOL INTERNSHIPS AT SEVERAL PUBLIC HIGH SCHOOLS. STUDENTS ENGAGE IN A VARIETY OF HANDS-ON RESTORATION ACTIVITIES, FROM WORKING WITH LOCAL PROFESSIONAL SITE PARTNERS TO DESIGNING THEIR OWN RESTORATION PROJECTS ON CAMPUS. THESE INTERNSHIPS OFFER STEWARDSHIP AND LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES FOR TEENS, FEATURING WATERSHED EDUCATION AND RESTORATION AND MARINE DEBRIS EDUCATION AND REDUCTION. IN 2018-19, 42 PARTICIPATING TEENS MET WEEKLY AFTER SCHOOL FOR 32 WEEKS, TO LEARN ABOUT THEIR LOCAL WATERSHED AND WORK OUT IN THE FIELD ONCE A MONTH. THEY ALSO CONDUCTED PUBLIC PRESENTATIONS AT SEVERAL CITY COUNCILS.CLIMATE ACTION PROGRAMTHE CLIMATE ACTION PROGRAM (SITA) HELPS STUDENTS LEARN ABOUT ISSUES RELATED TO CLIMATE AND TAKE ACTION TO BETTER THEIR ENVIRONMENTS. PROJECTS INCLUDE THE TRANSPORTATION ACTION PROJECT AND OUR NEW COMMUNITY URBAN FORESTRY PROJECT. IN 2018-19, 28 INTERNS ENGAGED THE COMMUNITY TO PLANT 90 TREES AROUND SCHOOL CAMPUSES TO STORE CARBON AND MITIGATE HEALTH IMPACTS OF AIR POLLUTION, AND INVENTORIED 6,000 TREES IN ALAMEDA COUNTY, CALCULATED THE CARBON FOOTPRINT FOR SEVERAL CAMPUSES AND RECOMMENDED MEASURES TO REDUCE EMISSIONS CAUSED BY VEHICLES, INCLUDING ALTERNATIVE TRANSPORTATION TO/FROM SCHOOL (BIKING).
