About this organization
Mission
The African Library Project starts and improves small libraries in sub-Saharan Africa to promote literacy and education while educating Americans about Africa.
About
Libraries: In 2018, ALP organized 331 book drives throughout the United States and Southern Canada and shipped 350,533 gently used books to create or supplement small libraries in Ghana, Sierra Leone, Kenya, Malawi, Botswana, Lesotho, and Swaziland (eSwatini). The increase from 285 libraries shipped in 2017 to 331 shipped in 2018 was made possible in large part by the additional engagement of youth through the Enlight Foundation grant funded ALP Youth Engagement Program. This program also added capacity building by funding two additional staff. From its founding in 2005 through 2018, APL shipped 2,612 libraries made up of over 2.7 million books to 12 countries.
