About
St. Michael Catholic Church was established September 29, 1966. Father Frank Corcoran was the founding pastor of the church. The creation of our parish was the result of steady increase in the Catholic population in southern Vicksburg and Warren County. For many years, Catholics of Vicksburg attended the old St. Michael Church on South Washington Street. The old St. Michael Church was used for an elementary school by the Sisters of Mercy. The building became a church in 1917 and was served by priests from St. Paul Catholic Church. In 1966, Bishop Richard O. Gerow recognized the cohesion that existed within the small church and grouped 160 families into our new parish. Less than four years later, our present parish hall was built to serve as an interim church and was dedicated by Bishop Joseph B. Brunini on May 14, 1970. Located on a 40-acre tract just off Fisher Ferry Road, the temporary church provided seating for 350 people with room in the spacious basement for educational and social activities. In October 1971, the rectory was built to replace a temporary one that had been established in Marion Park in 1967. Our present church was built under the direction of Father Noel Prendergast and was dedicated on August 28, 1988, by Bishop William R. Houck. In the fall of 2010, our parish leadership determined it was time to construct a new parish educational building. Ground was broken in December, with construction beginning in December. Bishop Joseph N. Latino dedicated our new building on August 25, 2013. Today, under the spiritual guidance of Father Robert Dore, our parish continues to grow with membership of over 400 families. We are blessed with strong lay participation in our many spiritual, educational, social, and community activities and are ready for continued service to God and His community in Vicksburg and Warren County.
