Mission

The mission of the Greater Birmingham Humane Society is to promote the humane treatment of animals and people through education, advocacy, and services.

About

GBHS is the oldest and largest animal shelter in Alabama, and one of the highest intake shelters in the U.S. GBHS manages animal care and control (ACC) for Jefferson County, the largest county in the state, and a majority of the municipalities within the county. ACC impounds and cares for more than 12,000 abused, neglected, and abandoned pets annually. Our animal control officers provide 24/7 response. Last year we responded to more than 500 after-hours emergency calls. We vaccinate all animals upon intake. We also trap, s/n, vaccinate, and return feral cats which has saved thousands of cats since the program's inception in 2018. GBHS won the contract to manage the animal shelter in the city of Jasper.
