About

Emergency Shelter: In April 2018, the board approved a new mission statement which is "we create sustainable change in the lives of our community's most vulnerable families." This new mission statement allowed Dawning Family Services (DFS), formerly Alpha House of Tampa, to expand its client base to all families with minor children (to include pregnant women)who meet the federal definition of homelessness are provided with safe shelter along with an array of supportive services while living at DFS. On-site residential staff provides support and guidance in navigating the day-to-day tasks of community and independent living. The campus is staffed 24 hours a day/365 days per year. Clients are provided essentials, such as toiletries, baby needs, and food, on an as-needed basis. In 2018, DFS sheltered 140 adults and 165 children. Each client works with their case manager to develop a plan to secure permanent housing and to pursue income opportunities. Case managers provide linkages to community resources and make referrals to other service providers, inform clients of job opportunities, and assist in obtaining government assistance as appropriate. A case manager follows up with clients after they have moved out of shelter and into their new homes to ensure stability and continued progress toward self-sufficiency. In 2018,93 families participated in DFS post-shelter support services.
