IN SEPTEMBER 2012, THE LAND TRUST ACQUIRED CANNON'S POINT PRESERVE - A 608-ACRE TRACT OF LAND ON THE NORTH END OF ST. SIMONS ISLAND FEATURING MATURE MARITIME FOREST, SIX MILES OF MARSH SHORE LINE INCLUDING DEEP WATER FRONTAGE, AND MANY OTHER BEAUTIFUL EXAMPLES OF COASTAL GEORGIA ECOLOGY. IN 2016, THE LAND TRUST WORKED ON SEVERAL IMPROVEMENTS TO CANNON'S POINT AND ADDED FEATURES FOR VISITORS. THE LAND TRUST ALSO BEGAN THE PROCESS OF CONSTRUCTING RESTROOMS FOR VISITORS TO USE. RESTROOMS AND AN ECOLOGY LAB ARE NOW COMPLETED AND IN USE.THE VISION OF THE LAND TRUST IS TO PROTECT AND CONSERVE 2000 ACRES ON ST. SIMONS ISLAND. EACH YEAR, THE LAND TRUST CONTINUES TO ACQUIRE MORE LAND TO MOVE CLOSER TOWARDS THAT GOAL.IN AUGUST 2015, THE TRUST REACHED AN AGREEMENT TO PURCHASE THREE PARCELS OF LAND CONSISTING OF APPROXIMATELY 260 ACRES OF THE PROPERTY KNOWN AS GUALE PRESERVE ON ST. SIMONS ISLAND. THE PLAN WAS TO PURCHASE THE PARCELS IN PHASES WITH FUNDING COMING FROM A COMBINATION OF GOVERNMENT GRANTS AND LOCAL DONORS. ON MAY 17, 2016, THE TRUST COMPLETED THE PURCHASE OF GUALE PRESERVE PHASE I, CONSISTING OF 58.4 ACRES. THE OTHER TWO PARCELS WERE SCHEDULED TO BE ACQUIRED IN THE TWO SUBSEQUENT YEARS. ON FEBRUARY 14, 2017, THE TRUST COMPLETED THE PURCHASE OF PHASE II CONSISTING OF 90.225 ACRES. PHASE III CLOSED IN 2018 CONSISTING OF 109.2 ACRES. THIS WILL BE A SPACE OPEN TO THE PUBLIC FOR VARIOUS NATURE ACTIVITIES AND ENJOYMENT.VARIOUS ADDITIONAL PROPERTIES HAVE BEEN AND WILL BE BOUGHT/ACQUIRED IN THE FUTURE TO GO TOWARDS THE LAND TRUST'S GOAL.IN 2018, THE TRUST BEGAN AN INITIATIVE CALLED THE CANOPY CAMPAIGN, WHICH IS SCHEDULED TO SPAN FOUR PHASES UNTIL 2020. IT IS AN OVERARCHING STRATEGY TO PRESERVE ST. SIMONS FROM NORTH TO SOUTH THROUGH THE ACQUISITION OF SEVERAL PROPERTIES.
