For the year ended June 30, 2019 Ballethnic Dance Company, Inc. operated the following programs:BALLETHNIC ACADEMY OF DANCE: Professional dance instructors provided training for all skill levels (age 3 adult) at our East Point studios from September-May. Students also benefited from master classes with guest artists Jamal Josef (a Ballethnic alumni, now a National Hip Hop Choreographer) and Sean McLeod (President & CEO, New York Institute of Dance and Education) who taught his master class in Reinforced Motor Function, which is now being taught globally. Ballethnics educational approach stresses disciplined lives, sound bodies, and focused minds. About 70 youth attend weekly classes in ballet, Pointe, Pas de Deux, modern, African, tap, and jazz with over 40 different classes offered. Students explored a variety of movement and dance techniques as well as workshops in costume design, nutrition, and hygiene and stage etiquette. They keep journals to enhance their craft concentrating on reading, writing and spelling skills as part of their training. Parents, families and teens attend adult classes. Students auditioned for roles in the companys productions of Urban Nutcracker and Meet the Animals of the Leopard Tale and performed in other community productions such as the Jungle book in Hapeville.Apprentice opportunities & student teacher positions continue to be available to advanced students. To end the season Ballethnic Academy of Dance held its annual Spring Open House performance at the Southwest Arts Center, to an audience of approximately 175. Ballethnic Dance Company, Inc. also provides free outdoor performances to the community monthly, from April October on its outdoor stage. Ballethnic Dance Company, Inc.s Youth Professionals as well as other community performers bring an array of talent to the spring through the fall series.Ballethnic Dance Company, Inc. has a long-term commitment in supporting women and girls in our community not only as participants in the dance training programs, but as company members, artistic and administrative staff, Board of Directors, parents, & community volunteers. The success of the personal development and leadership program Beyond the Barre program is particularly rewarding. Ballethnic Dance Company, Inc. will continue to offer this program, which empowers young women and prepares them for leadership roles in the community. Ballethnic also partners with A Dancers Heart, another nonprofit that collaborates to present youth development workshops. Through educational workshops, participants explore a variety of themes and issues such as communication and collaboration, conflict resolution, health and wellness, literacy, and education. One of the most successful workshops has been college preparation and also inviting the preteens in to talk about social challenges. The Dancers Heart Foundation also funded the Imani scholarship at the annual Open House Performance in May.BALLETHNIC YOUTH ENSEMBLE (BYE): In this pre-professional training and dance ensemble for young people ages 7 to adult, participants receive an advanced level of instruction and undergo intense training, exercise, and self-discipline to improve their craft. The goal is to nurture members of the youth ensemble and support them with future apprentice and dance opportunities in professional companies. The BYE Ensemble has been essential in participating in the school lecture demonstrations and MARTA Art Bound, the Taliah Waajid World Natural Hair & Healthy Lifestyle Event and the Inman Park Dance Festival. They were also able to expand their exposure to participate in the East Athens Educational Dance Centers Day of Dance in March.SCHOOL PERFORMANCES AT THE FERST CENTER FOR THE ARTS: Due to the late date (December 14th, 2018) and a change of venue (because of the renovation of Morehouse King Chapel), we were unable to offer school shows at Tri-Cities High Schools Viola Turner Chapel. However, we were able to provide the school shows at Porter Sanford, III Performing Arts Center in Dekalb County along with the 3 public shows. Free and reduced-price tickets are provided to shelters, churches, VSA Arts for Georgia and other educational and social service organizations.DANCE DIVERSITY SUMMER ARTS CAMP Dance training and exposure to the performing arts is offered through Ballethnic Dance Company, Inc.s summer classes. Dance Diversity Summer Camp is a 4-week program that targets ages 5- 18 held the last week of June - late July. Guest artists teach dance, drumming, African history, songs and music. Approximately 50 students attended beginning, intermediate and advanced level classes. Summer performances take place around the South Fulton/East Point community including recreation centers, schools, churches, art centers, etc. Classes culminate in a community performance and open house at the Bowden Multipurpose Center reaching approximately 100 residents. The theme was Meet the Animals of The Leopard Tale where students successfully learned and performed steps from the signature Ballet.DANSEUR DEVELOPMENT PROJECT: The Danseur Development Project is designed as a creative tool for young men to express themselves through intense athletic training and body movement. Waverly Lucas provides one-on-one training to youth ages 6-21 primarily in the East Point community. Young men in their mid to late twenties who have started their dance careers at a late stage also participate in the classes. Weekly classes are offered September-May on the weekends and after school. The teachers have succeeded in involving the youth and their fathers in a program, which encourages positive role models for young males.OUTREACH PROGRAMS/ LECTURES DEMONSTRATIONS AND WORKSHOPS: A wide variety of school performances, community productions, lectures, exhibitions (costume design, dance history), artist talks and mini-workshops are offered in all parts of the Fulton County community and Athens Clarke County. Thirty - forty performances are given annually at public schools, recreation centers, festivals, and community facilities (Summerset Assisted Living, Inc., Inman Park Festival, and Bowden Senior Center.)SERVICES DESIGNED TO REACH NEIGHBORHOODS IN NORTH, SOUTH AND SOUTHWEST FULTON COUNTY:Ballethnic Dance Company, Inc. will continue to target the immediate South Fulton community for education and outreach programs. Ballethnic Dance Company, Inc. currently performs and attends career days to present outreach programs throughout South Fulton neighborhoods (East Point, Hapeville, Union City, College Park as well as North Fulton (Alpharetta) and Athens Clarke County. Dance is encouraged as an athletic pursuit as well as an art form and youth who are looking for energetic and innovative after school activities are drawn to the program. Working with our mentors and role models, young people engage in a stimulating program that encourages teamwork and participation while fostering discipline, an appreciation for the arts and a positive work ethic and educational experience. Sponsored free school performances as part of the City of Atlanta Cultural Experience Project provide access to Urban Nutcracker. Ballethnic Dance Company, Inc. and the Youth Ensemble regularly participate in neighborhood celebrations particularly in our South Fulton region. The company also works with the city of East Point to coordinate various community events in the neighborhood, performing at sites such as Bowden Senior Center. Also, Ballethnic Dance Company, Inc. will continue teaching through its community garden.
