SCOTLAND MEMORIAL FOUNDATION WAS CREATED IN 1988, CHARGED WITH THE MISSION TO PROMOTE AND ADVANCE CHARITABLE, SCIENTIFIC AND EDUCATIONAL PURPOSES BY SUPPORTING AND PROMOTING THE ACTIVITIES AND PURPOSES OF SCOTLAND HEALTH CARE SYSTEM (SHCS). IN THE CURRENT YEAR, THE FOUNDATION CONTINUED TO WORK IN PARTNERSHIP WITH SHCS TO IMPROVE THE COMMUNITY'S HEALTH THROUGH A VARIETY OF PROGRAMS.THE FOUNDATION RAISES FUNDS PRIMARILY THROUGH ANNUAL EVENTS, GIFTS FROM DONORS, AND THE HIGHLAND SOCIETY. DONORS HAVE DEMONSTRATED COMMITMENT TO THE FOUNDATION AND SHCS BY FUNDING NUMEROUS HEALTH-RELATED PROGRAMS AND SERVICES THROUGHOUT THE SURROUNDING COMMUNITIES. THESE COMMITMENTS HAVE BEEN ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT IN RECENT YEARS OF HARDSHIP DUE TO ECONOMIC CHALLENGES.SCOTLAND MEMORIAL FOUNDATION APPLIES FOR AND IS AWARDED GRANTS FROM EXTERNAL ORGANIZATIONS ON A REGULAR BASIS FOR USE IN FURTHERING ITS' MISSION. GRANTS ARE RECEIVED FROM ORGANIZATIONS SUCH AS CANNON FOUNDATION, DUKE ENDOWMENT, AND GOLDEN LEAF FOUNDATION.IN VARIOUS WAYS, THE FOUNDATION PROVIDES SUPPORT TO DEPARTMENTS OF SCOTLAND MEMORIAL HOSPITAL SUCH AS THE CANCER CENTER, CARDIOPULMONARY REHABILITATION, CARDIOVASCULAR CENTER, EMERGENCY CENTER, WOMEN'S SERVICES, AND WOUND HEALING CENTER. SUCH SUPPORT TO DEPARTMENTS PROVIDED FUNDS FOR COMMUNITY-BASED PROGRAMS, INDIGENT PATIENTS, MINOR EQUIPMENT AND EDUCATIONAL SUPPLIES.FOUNDATION FUNDING SUBSIDIZED HEALTH SCREENINGS IN THE HOSPITAL AND IN MOBILE HEALTH VANS. SCREENINGS AND SERVICES PROVIDED ARE FOR CHOLESTEROL, BLOOD, BODY FAT, PROSTATE CANCER, BONE DENSITY AND MAMMOGRAMS.WOMEN'S AND MEN'S HEALTH EVENTS WERE SPONSORED FOR THE COMMUNITY PROVIDING FUN EVENTS AND HEALTH SCREENINGS WITH OPPORTUNITIES TO LEARN ABOUT PERTINENT HEALTH ISSUES USING MOTIVATIONAL SPEAKERS AND EDUCATION SESSIONS. ALSO DURING THE YEAR, A FREE DIABETES EDUCATION FAIR WAS PRESENTED.ALSO, THE FOUNDATION SUPPORTED COMMUNITY EMOTIONAL HEALTH BY PROVIDING SPACE AND FUNDING FOR ALZHEIMER'S, AMPUTEE, PULMONARY, CANCER, CARDIAC REHABILITATION, DIABETES, MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS, PARKINSON'S, AND STROKE SUPPORT GROUPS.FOUNDATION SUPPORT FOR COMMUNITY YOUTH WAS DEMONSTRATED BY PROVIDING FREE PHYSICALS FOR MIDDLE/HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS, MERIT-BASED SCHOLARSHIPS FOR HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS WHO EXCEL IN THEIR STUDIES AND PLAN TO PURSUE CAREERS IN HEALTH CARE. ALSO, SUPPORT WAS PROVIDED FOR THE PILOT CLUB, THE TOMMY BRITT SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM, THE UNIVERSITY OF PEMBROKE DEPARTMENT OF RECREATION, ST. ANDREWS UNIVERSITY WRESTLING CLUB AND BASEBALL TEAM.THE FOUNDATION BOARD OF TRUSTEES PARTICIPATED IN COMMUNITY FUNDRAISING REPORTS AND SERVED ON COMMITTEES TO PLAN FOR INCREASED SERVICES, AND RECRUITED COMMUNITY LEADERS FOR MEMBERSHIP IN THE PLANNED GIVING PROGRAM. DURING THE YEAR, THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES HOSTED THE PREMIER ANNUAL BLACK-TIE FUNDRAISING GALA, THE PROCEEDS OF WHICH ARE USED TO SUPPORT OUTREACH SERVICES PROVIDED BY SCOTLAND HEATH CARE SYSTEM.
