FY2019 IN MAY 2019, THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS APPROVED THE STRATEGIC DIRECTION FOR THE NEXT THREE YEARS AFTER A NINE (9) MONTH STRATEGIC PLANNING PROCESS THAT INCLUDED THE BOARD, STAFF, AND STAKEHOLDERS. AS A RESULT, A VISION THAT IS MORE DIRECTLY ASSOCIATED WITH THE MUSEUM AND A MISSION STATEMENT THAT IS ACHIEVABLE, ASPIRATIONAL AND INCLUDES A "CALL TO ACTION" WERE ADOPTED. VISION: WE ENVISION A SOCIETY WHERE HUMAN RIGHTS, RACIAL AND ECONOMIC JUSTICE ARE EXTENDED TO ALL. MISSION: THE NATIONAL CIVIL RIGHTS MUSEUM (NCRM), LOCATED AT THE HISTORIC LORRAINE MOTEL, HONORS AND PRESERVES THE LEGACY OF DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING. WE CHRONICLE THE AMERICAN CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT AND TELL THE STORY OF THE ONGOING STRUGGLE FOR HUMAN RIGHTS. DR. KING'S LEGACY IN THE 21ST CENTURY", A COMPENDIUM OF THE APRIL 3, 2018 MLK50 SYMPOSIUM AND ARTICLES BY SCHOLARS & THOUGHT LEADERS AND "POVERTY REPORT II", TWO-PART REPORT EXAMINES THE ISSUE OF POVERTY, THAT WAS OF CRITICAL IMPORTANCE TO DR. KING IN 1968, AND REMAINS AN ISSUE TODAY; THE SECOND PART REVIEWS HOW COMMUNITIES LIKE MEMPHIS CAN THINK ABOUT FUTURE GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT TO DECREASE POVERTY AND INCREASE INCLUSIVE DEVELOPMENT PRACTICES.THE FOUNDATION OF NCRM IS THE STORY OF THE AMERICAN CIVIL RIGHTS FROM 1619 TO THE PRESENT DAY. AS EXPECTED, THE 50TH COMMEMORATION OF DR. KING'S MURDER GENERATED EXPANDED INTEREST IN VISITING THE NCRM, THE HISTORIC SITE. FY2018 MUSEUM ATTENDANCE PEAKED AT 355,362, AN ALL-TIME HIGH, PLUS 26,854 PROGRAM PARTICIPANTS. FY2019 ATTENDANCE DIPPED SLIGHTLY 5% TO 339,288 WITH 17,734 PROGRAM PARTICIPANTS BUT REMAINED 9% ABOVE FY2017 ATTENDANCE OF 310,723; 21,881 PROGRAM PARTICIPANTS (WHICH INCLUDED A PORTION OF THE YEARLONG MLK50 PROGRAMMING). NATIONAL & GLOBAL MUSEUM VISITORS CAME INDIVIDUALLY, OR IN ORGANIZED GROUPS (ADULTS, FAMILY REUNIONS, SCHOOL CLASSROOMS, CORPORATE, ORGANIZATION). OF THE FY2019 VISITORS ABOUT 90,000 WERE SCHOOL AGED, INCLUDING SOME TITLE I SCHOOL FREE FIELD TRIPS.THE NCRM IS KNOWN AS "A NEW PUBLIC SQUARE." IT IS A GATHERING PLACE OR END-PLACE FOR MARCHES, AND NCRM FREE PROGRAMS ON CURRENT DAY ISSUES. ADULTS: BOOK & AUTHOR TALKS, DOCUMENTARY SCREENINGS, CATALYSTS FOR CHANGE SPEAKER SERIES, PANEL DISCUSSIONS, INDIVIDUAL COHORT-BASED (30-40 PEOPLE FOR 7 MONTHS) "UNPACKING RACISM FOR ACTION". YOUTH/STUDENT/ FAMILIES: IN-SCHOOL PROGRAMS, SMALL BUT MIGHTY READING CIRCLE, FREE RUBY BRIDGES READING FESTIVAL & BOOK GIVEAWAY FOR PRE-K THROUGH ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS (1600 ATTEND TO SEE AUTHORS, LITERACY RESOURCES, READERS), HOSTED BY CIVIL RIGHTS ICON RUBY BRIDGES-HALL WITH THE NATIONAL CIVIL RIGHTS MUSEUM. KING DAY NATIONAL HOLIDAY FREE OUTDOOR PROGRAMMING, AND FREE MUSEUM ADMISSION WITH CANNED GOODS FOR DONATION TO THE MID-SOUTH FOOD BANK, FOUR FREE ADMISSIONS WITH DONATION OF ONE UNIT OF BLOOD. OVER 400 COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERS SUPPORT THIS DAY OF GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY WHEN 5,000-8,000 COME TO OUR CAMPUS.THE 27TH ANNUAL FREEDOM AWARD WITH MORNING STUDENT FORUM FOR 2,500 (NO CHARGE + BUS TRANSPORTATION), AND EVENING GALA & CEREMONY WITH SOME 1,600 GUESTS WHO HONORED IN OCT. 2018 THE CONTEMPORARY CIVIL RIGHTS HEROES: REV. JESSE JACKSON, SR., VICE PRESIDENT JOE BIDEN, AND J.R. "PITT" HYDE. AND, NIGHT AT THE LORRAINE HELD AT ON THE MUSEUM CAMPUS BOTH INSIDE AND OUTSIDE ATTRACTS OVER 1,000 PATRONS, PRIMARILY MILLENNIALS AND GEN-X. ALIGNED NONPROFIT GROUPS USE THE FACILITY FREE OF CHARGE FOR MEETINGS. OTHER INDIVIDUALS AND GROUPS RENT THE FACILITY. FUTURE SUSTAINABILITY OF THE MUSEUM WITH ITS THREE BUILDINGS ON ITS 4.5 ACRE CAMPUS IS PROTECTED BY THE GROWING ENDOWMENT FUND, ORIGINALLY SEEDED IN 2015 BY A SUCCESSFUL CHALLENGE GRANT FROM THE NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE HUMANITIES AND FURTHER EXPANDED BY NEW INSTITUTIONAL EFFORTS.ACHIEVEMENTS INCLUDE: JUNE 2019, THE INSTITUTE FOR MUSEUMS AND LIBRARY SERVICES NAMED NCRM ONE OF TEN ACROSS THE U.S. WITH ITS HIGHEST AND MOST DISTINGUISHED AWARD - NATIONAL MEDAL OF HONOR.
