Our mission is to shift the balance in Ellerbe Creek towards ecological health and beauty through habitat restoration, preservation, trail building, stream cleanups, and education.

ACTIVITIES INCLUDED TRAIL BUILDING, INVASIVE PLANT REMOVAL, NATIVE PLANT RESTORATION, INSTALLATION OF INTERPRETIVE SIGNAGE AND PUBLIC WALKS, EDUCATIONAL EVENTS AND CLEAN UP DAYS. WATER QUALITY PROTECTION - WORK TO RESTORE WATER QUALITY TO DURHAM'S URBAN AREAS THROUGH GREEN INFRASTRUCTURE AND CREEK SMART PRACTICES - WETLAND AND CREEK CLEAN UPS (IN AREAS OUTSIDE OF PRESERVES) - MAINTENANCE OF NATIVE WETLAND GARDENS IN CITY PARKS AND SITES THROUGHOUT THE WATERSHED - ESTABLISHED 2 STORM WATER MONITORING STATIONS ALONG ELLERBE CREEK TO ASSESS STORM FLOWS AND DEVELOP SOLUTIONS LAND PROTECTION - PARTICIPATION IN LAND FOR TOMORROW, A STATE-WIDE INITIATIVE TO SAVE THE STATE'S CHERISHED NATURAL TREASURES, FARMLAND AND OPEN SPACE - PARTICIPATION IN THE UPPER NEUSE CLEAN WATER INITIATIVE, A COLLABORATIVE EFFORT TO PROTECT LAND RATED CRITICAL TO PROTECT WATER QUALITY THROUGHOUT THE UPPER NEUSE BASIN - SUBMISSION OF GRANT TO STATE FOR FUNDS TO PROTECT 32.5 ACRES OF WETLAND AND FLOODPLAIN EDUCATION AND INFORMATION - ONGOING BIRD AND PLANT WALKS - ONGOING INVENTORY OF MORE THAN 800 SPECIES OF PLANTS AND ANIMALS - PROVISION OF INFORMATION ABOUT THE WATERSHED THROUGH WEB SITE, LISTSERV, NEWSLETTERS AND MONTHLY E-ZINE. - INITIATION OF "NO CHILD LEFT INSIDE", AN ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION PARTNERSHIP WITH A LOCAL SCHOOL PROGRAM FOR AT-RISK YOUTH - OBTAINED 416,000 STATE GRANT IN 2008 TO RESTORE .7 MILES OF ELLERBE CREEK BETWEEN ALBANY ST AND I-85
