HIGHLIGHTS OF THIS YEAR'S COMPLETED ACQUISITIONS ARE THE FOLLOWING: - TAPPING FUNDS SET ASIDE IN A 7 MILLION SETTLEMENT AWARDED TO THE COASTAL LAND TRUST IN APRIL 2018 FOR ACQUISITIONS IN AND AROUND THE CROATAN NATIONAL FOREST, WE COMPLETED ACQUISITION OF 3 SEPARATE PARCELS. THE GALES CREEK / TALTON (CARTERET COUNTY) TRACT PRESERVED 113 ACRES OF LONGLEAF PINE ON A TIDAL CREEK, THE 182-ACRE TRENT RIVER / DAVIS TRACT (CRAVEN COUNTY) PROTECTED AN INHOLDING IN THE NATIONAL FOREST, AND THE SPECTACULAR 247-ACRE ISLAND CREEK TRACT (JONES COUNTY) PROTECTED ONE OF THE STATE'S RAREST AND MOST SIGNIFICANT MARL FORESTS, FULL OF RARE PLANTS. - THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE YEAR WAS THE PURCHASE OF MORE THAN 5,400 ACRES AND 17 MILES OF WATERFRONTAGE AT SALTER'S CREEK, IN THE AREA OF CARTERET COUNTY KNOWN AS "DOWN EAST". RENOWNED FOR ITS WATERFOWL HABITAT AND OTHER CONSERVATION VALUES, THE PROJECT ATTRACTED FUNDING FROM 10 DIFFERENT DONORS AND AGENCIES, INCLUDING THE US MARINE CORPS. WE TRANSFERRED THE MAJORITY OF THE TRACT, MORE THAN 5,100 ACRES, TO THE NC WILDLIFE, FOR MANAGEMENT AS PUBLIC GAME LANDS. COASTAL LAND TRUST HAS RETAINED AND WILL MANAGE THE REMAINING 300+ ACRES AS A NATURE PRESERVE. - AS PART OF ITS COMMUNITY CONSERVATION WORK, AND IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE CEDAR HILL/ WEST BANK HERITAGE FOUNDATION, THE COASTAL LAND TRUST PURCHASED REAVES CHAPEL, ONE OF THE CAPE FEAR REGION'S MOST CULTURALLY AND HISTORICALLY SIGNIFICANT AFRICAN AMERICAN STRUCTURES. THE GOAL OF THE COASTAL LAND TRUST, WHICH HAS PROTECTED MORE THAN 17,000 ACRES OF LAND ALONG THE WEST BANKS OF THE LOWER CAPE FEAR RIVER AND ITS TRIBUTARIES, MANY OF WHICH WERE FORMERLY RICE PLANTATIONS WORKED BY ENSLAVED AFRICAN AMERICANS, WAS TO PRESERVE A PLACE THAT HONORED THOSE WORKERS, MANY OF WHOM WERE GULLAH-GEECHEE. REAVES CHAPEL IS IN A STATE OF EXTREME DISREPAIR; THE COASTAL LAND TRUST'S GOAL IS TO STABILIZE, REPAIR, AND EVENTUALLY RESTORE THE BUILDING. IDEALLY, REAVES CHAPEL WILL BECOME A STATE HISTORIC SITE IN THE FUTURE.
