THE NORTH CAROLINA MUSEUM OF HISTORY ASSOCIATES PROVIDES DIRECT SUPPORT TO THE NORTH CAROLINA MUSEUM OF HISTORY AS ITS FRIENDS GROUP. THE ASSOCIATES SUPPORTS THE MUSEUM'S AWARD-WINNING EXHIBITIONS, OUTSTANDING EDUCATIONAL AND COMMUNITY OUTREACH, AND THE ACQUISITION OF ARTIFACTS IMPORTANT TO NORTH CAROLINA'S HISTORY. THE ORGANIZATION ALSO HELPS FUND THREE FESTIVALS AND THE MUSEUM'S DOCENT PROGRAM ALONG WITH THE MULTIPLE PROGRAMS IT SUPPORTS IN THE MUSEUM THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. LAST YEAR, THE NORTH CAROLINA MUSEUM OF HISTORY ASSOCIATES DIRECT SUPPORT OF THE MUSEUM RESULTED IN THE FOLLOWING ACCOMPLISHMENTS: 12 EXTRAORDINARY EXHIBITS INCLUDING SELMA TO MONTGOMERY, NORTH CAROLINA AND WWI, THE NORTH CAROLINA ROOTS OF ARTIST ERNIE BARNES, SCENT OF THE PINE: YOU KNOW HOW I FEEL: NORTH CAROLINA ART FROM THE JONATHAN P. ALCOTT COLLECTION, THE SHAPE OF FASHION, LOUIS C. TIFFANY: ART AD INNOVATION FROM THE WESTER COLLECTION, AND MANY MORE. 5,277 STUDENTS RECEIVED 55 TRAVEL GRANTS IN 37 NORTH CAROLINA COUNTIES TO TRAVEL TO THE MUSEUM. 8,001 STUDENTS AND ADVISERS PARTICIPATED IN THE TARHEEL JUNIOR HISTORIAN ASSOCIATION, A HISTORY "CLUB" FOR STUDENTS TO TAKE A DEEPER DIVE INTO THE PAST, CREATE PROJECTS AROUND WHAT THEIR FOCUS IS, AND THEN COMPETE AT AN ANNUAL CONVENTION WHERE SEVERAL WINNERS IN DIFFERENT CATEGORIES WILL HAVE THEIR WORK ON DISPLAY IN THE TARHEEL JUNIOR GALLERY FOR A YEAR. THIS NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS WAS A 141% INCREASE FROM THE PRIOR YEAR. 9,627 VISITORS ATTENDED THE AFRICAN AMERICAN CULTURAL CELEBRATION, AN ANNUAL EVENT FILLED WITH MUSIC, DANCE, ART, FOOD, AND HANDS-ON LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES FOR ATTENDEES. 10,541 HOURS GIVEN BY 138 VOLUNTEERS AND DOCENTS. DOCENTS WORK DIRECTLY WITH SCHOOL GROUPS AND VISITORS TO FURTHER EXPLAIN ARTIFACTS FOUND IN THE GALLERIES AND ALLOW HANDS-ON OPPORTUNITIES WITH ARTIFACT REPRODUCTIONS AT EDUCATIONAL CARTS FOUND THROUGHOUT THE MUSEUM. 15,422 VISITORS ATTENDED THE AMERICAN INDIAN HERITAGE CELEBRATION. THE EVENT BEGINS ON A FRIDAY FOR AN FULL DAY OF EDUCATION TO SCHOOL GROUPS WHO CAN INDIRECT DIRECTLY WITH MEMBERS OF AND ARTISTS FROM NORTH CAROLINA'S EIGHT RECOGNIZED TRIBES. THE SECOND DAY OF THE EVENT IS A COMMUNITY-WIDE CELEBRATION FILLED WITH DANCING, MUSIC, ART, AND MORE. 66,401 STUDENTS AND EDUCATORS ENGAGED WITH LIVE STREAMING AND DISTANCE LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES. 25,402 STUDENTS AND EDUCATORS CONNECTED WITH HISTORY THROUGH THE MUSEUM'S HISTORY-IN-A-BOX KITS. THESE KITS ARE FILLED WITH REPLICA ARTIFACTS, EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES AND ACTIVITIES FOR TEACHERS TO HELP BRING HISTORY TO LIFE IN THE CLASSROOM. IT ALSO OFFERS THE OPPORTUNITY FOR STUDENTS AND SCHOOLS WHO CANNOT TRAVEL TO THE MUSEUM TO ENGAGE WITH HISTORY IN A TANGIBLE WAY. 83,091 STUDENTS, TEACHERS, AND SENIORS VISITED THE MUSEUM. 104,171 STUDENTS AND TEACHERS ENGAGED WITH THE MUSEUM'S EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES. 243,112 PEOPLE PARTICIPATED IN 4,490 MUSEUM PROGRAMS. 450,000 MUSEUM GUESTS VISITED THE NORTH CAROLINA AND WWI EXHIBIT, A RECORD-BREAKING NUMBER FOR ANY EXHIBIT THE MUSEUM HAS EVER HAD. 464,597 TOTAL VISITORS TO THE MUSEUM FROM NORTH CAROLINA AND AROUND THE GLOBE.
