About
FIELD SCHOOL OF CHARLOTTESVILLE WAS FOUNDED IN 2007 WITH A MISSION TO "DEVELOP WELL-ROUNDED BOYS OF CHARACTER AND ACCOMPLISHMENT." OUR TWO PRIMARY STRENGTHS ARE OUR PROGRAM, ONE SUITED UNIQUELY TO THE EDUCATIONAL NEEDS OF MIDDLE SCHOOL BOYS, AND OUR FACULTY TEAM, A TIGHTLY KNIT CORE THOROUGHLY DEDICATED TO THE WELFARE OF THE SCHOOL. AMONG OUR QUANTIFIABLE ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF OUR FIRST DECADE ARE THE FOLLOWING: AN AVERAGE 2.2% PER YEAR PERCENTILE IMPROVEMENT PER YEAR ON COMPOSITE STANDARDIZED TESTS (ITBS); SCHOOL'S SCORE ON STANDARDIZED TESTS AVERAGE IN THE 95TH PERCENTILE; 99% STUDENT PARTICIPATION RATE ON COMPETITIVE SCHOOL SPORTS TEAMS; AND SUCCESSFUL MATRICULATION OF ALL OUR STUDENTS TO AREA HIGH SCHOOLS, SELECTIVE PUBLIC HIGH SCHOOL ACADEMIES, LOCAL AND DISTANT PRIVATE SCHOOLS, AND 3 INTERNATIONAL SCHOOLS. OUR PROGRAM REVOLVES AROUND ACADEMICALLY AMBITIOUS CORE CLASSES IN MATH, ENGLISH, LATIN OR SPANISH, SCIENCE, AND HISTORY. OUR ART AND MUSIC CLASSES EACH MEET TWICE PER WEEK, WITH DAILY STUDY HALL AND TEAM SPORTS. THE SCHOOL ALSO REGULARLY TEACHES LEADERSHIP AND ETHICS. WE ALSO ANTICIPATE CONTINUED GROWTH IN THE QUALITY OF THE SCHOOL FACULTY. OUR FACULTY MODELS AND MIRRORS THE SCHOOL'S MISSION TO "DEVELOP WELL-ROUNDED BOYS OF CHARACTER AND ACCOMPLISHMENT." OUR SALARIES AND BENEFITS OPPORTUNITIES ARE COMPETITIVE WITH OTHER AREA PRIVATE SCHOOLS, AND WE HAVE BEEN FORTUNATE TO DRAW THE BEST CANDIDATES AVAILABLE TO OUR LITTLE SCHOOL. OUR SCHOOL CONSCIOUSLY ATTENDS TO THE WHOLE--THE ACADEMIC, SOCIAL, PHYSICAL, CREATIVE, ETHICAL, AND PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT OF EACH OF THE BOYS. EACH OF THE FIVE MAJOR DISCIPLINES (HISTORY, ENGLISH, MATH, SCIENCE, AND FOREIGN LANGUAGE) IS TAUGHT FOR 200 MINUTES WEEKLY BY ONE OR TWO FACULTY MEMBERS, GENERALLY TEACHING THE SAME SUBJECT FOR ALL FOUR GRADES, WITH ATTENTION TO BOTH SKILL DEVELOPMENT AND FUNDAMENTAL INFORMATION AND IDEAS--A CORE BODY OF KNOWLEDGE SHARED THROUGHOUT THE SCHOOL. EACH COURSE HAS ITS OWN SET OF GOALS, ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS, UNITS, EVALUATION METHODS, RESOURCES, SKILLS AND ANTICIPATED OUTCOMES. THE RESPONSIBILITIES FOR OTHER AREAS IN THE CURRICULUM, INCLUDING STUDY SKILLS, TEAM SPORTS, READING, AND ETHICS AND LEADERSHIP, ARE SHARED BY THE FULL-TIME FACULTY. AS A SMALL SCHOOL, WE HAVE THE UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY TO COLLABORATE CLOSELY ACROSS OUR ENTIRE CURRICULUM. EACH YEAR IS CHARACTERIZED BY A SERIES OF SCHOOL-WIDE FOUR- TO SIX-WEEK UNITS THAT APPEAL TO OUR STUDENTS. THESE REPRESENT OPPORTUNITIES TO TIE TOGETHER CONCEPTS FROM OUR VARIOUS DISCIPLINES AND OFTEN CULMINATE IN LOCAL OR REGIONAL FIELD TRIPS. EXAMPLES INCLUDE ARCHITECTURE, SERVICE, PHOTOGRAPHY, AVIATION, ANIMATION, ASIA, ECONOMICS, CIVICS, ASTRONOMY, CARS, COMEDY, LATIN AMERICA, ESPIONAGE, SHAKESPEARE, AND THE CIVIL WAR. FIELD TRIPS ARE A REGULAR FEATURE OF OUR CURRICULUM, OCCURRING GENERALLY ONCE PER UNIT.
