Classroom Earth: With a commitment to connecting people to nature and preparing the next generation of environmental stewards, most of NEEF's programs engage the public with the outdoors, primarily on public lands. This category includes developing connections that help people understand how the environment impacts their lives through National Public Lands Day, the nation's largest single-day volunteer effort for public lands; Hands on the Land, the nation's largest network of field classrooms on public lands; and the Department of Defense's legacy grantmaking program. Also included is Environmental Education Week, a nationwide celebration of environmental education, which raises awareness of the value of environmental education nationwide; and Citizen Science, which involves students and teachers in and out of the classroom, and allows them to interact with nature enthusiasts, meteorologists, federal partners, and educators.
