The READ Center's mission is to change lives through adult literacy. We aim to help adults with low-level literacy develop basic reading and communication skills so they can fulfill their roles as citizens, workers, and family members. This mission is accomplished by providing classroom instruction, one-to-one tutoring, and educational resources to support students.

IN THE 2018-2019 ACADEMIC YEAR THE READ CENTER SERVED 150 ADULTS THROUGH CLASSES AND TUTORING AND IN COMMUNITY FINANCIAL LITERACY PROGRAMS. READ CENTER STUDENTS ACHIEVED 347 PERSONAL LITERACY GOALS INCLUDING GETTING JOBS, PASSING JOB CERTIFICATION CLASSES, GETTING DRIVER LICENSE, HELPING CHILDREN WITH HOMEWORK, IMPROVING READING, DIGITAL AND FINANCIAL SKILLS, SELF-CONFIDENCE AND SELF-ESTEEM. AT THE READ CENTER LITERACY PROGRESS AND LIFE PROGRESS GO HAND-IN-HAND. THE READ CENTER SERVES STUDENTS WHO READ BETWEEN A 0-7 GRADE LEVEL. 58% OF READ STUDENTS WERE BEGINNING READERS (READING AT 0-3 GRADE LEVEL) AND 18% WERE DEVELOPING READERS (READING AT 4-5 GRADE LEVEL). BEGINNING READERS ARE PLACED IN SMALL CLASSES WITH A TEACHER (READ STAFF) AND SUPPORTED BY VOLUNTEER TUTORS. CLASSES MEET TWICE EACH WEEK FOR 2 HOURS AND PROVIDE A MORE INTENSE AND STRUCTURED LEARNING ENVIRONMENT FOR BEGINNING READERS. DEVELOPING READERS AND INTERMEDIATE READERS (6-8 GRADE LEVEL) CAN REQUEST TO WORK WITH A 1:1 TUTOR. 1:1 PAIRS MEET AT LEAST ONCE EACH WEEK FOR 2 HOURS.READ DEBUTED AN ONLINE READING PROGRAM, IXL, IN 2018-2019. IXL PROVIDES STUDENTS ADDITIONAL PRACTICE IN READING, MATH, AND DIGITAL SKILLS. STUDENT FEEDBACK HAS BEEN POSITIVE AND PARTICIPATION RATES HAVE BEEN HIGH. THIS PAST YEAR, 75 READ STUDENTS LOGGED 1,039 HOURS IN IXL WITH 156,213 QUESTIONS ANSWERED. READ WILL CONTINUE TO ADD SEATS IN IXL AS MORE STUDENTS ENROLL IN PROGRAMS.READ PILOTED HEALTH AND FINANCIAL LITERACY PROGRAMS IN 2017-2018 AND CONTINUES TO PROVIDE AND EXPAND ON THESE SERVICES. HEALTH LITERACY IS INTEGRATED INTO CLASSES BASED ON STUDENT-REQUESTED THEMES FOR EACH TRIMESTER. READABLES, ACTIVITY BOOKLETS DESIGNED BY READ STAFF, LAUNCHED DURING THE 2018-2019 SPRING TRIMESTER. THE INFORMATIVE WORKBOOKS ALLOW STUDENTS TO PRACTICE READING AND WRITING SKILLS WHILE ALSO DEVELOPING HEALTH LITERACY. READ WILL CONTINUE TO PROVIDE READABLES IN 2019-2020 AND EXPAND ON ADDITIONAL TOPICS LIKE DIABETES, HISTORIC RICHMOND NEIGHBORHOODS, AND ASIAN-AMERICAN HISTORY.
