Mission

JLW promotes voluntarism and develops the potential of women to improve the community.

About

Volunteer development is critical part of the JLW mission. Equipping our members to serve as trained volunteers and civic leaders is an important way that we provide support to more than 20 community organizations across the Washington, DC, region. Each year, JLW places more than 1,200 members in community organizations as trained volunteers. By empowering this network of women with the skillset and tools to volunteer and lead effectively, we are able to foster lasting community change. Every JLW volunteer receives training from the league throughout her membership. Additionally, the JLW leadership institute offers regular training in leadership skills to members who are in or are seeking leadership roles. These leadership development courses support community organizations in multiple areas: program volunteers, board leadership, community awareness, and public engagement. Since 2014, nearly 140 members have completed our get on board training, which equips women to serve on community boards. Our development & training committee hosts dozens of topic-specific seminars each year for members; recent subjects have included: volunteering with underserved populations, conflict resolution, and navigating negotiations.
