THE YOUNG WOMEN'S PROJECT BUILDS THE LEADERSHIP AND POWER OF YOUNG PEOPLE SO THAT THEY CAN TRANSFORM DC INSTITUTIONS TO EXPAND RIGHTS AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR DC YOUTH. YWP PROGRAMS GUIDE YOUTH THROUGH A PROCESS OF PERSONAL TRANSFORMATION SO THEY CAN BECOME LEADERS IN THEIR PEER GROUPS, SCHOOLS, FAMILIES, AND COMMUNITIES WHO ARE ABLE TO ANALYZE PROBLEMS, IDENTIFY SOLUTIONS, AND ADVOCATE FOR CHANGE. YWP WAS FOUNDED IN 1994 AS ORGANIZATION BY AND FOR YOUNG WOMEN BUT NOW INVOLVES A GROWING NUMBER OF YOUNG MEN. THIRTY-FIVE PERCENT OF THE 300 YOUNG PEOPLE WE WORK WITH EACH YEAR ARE YOUNG MEN. YOUNG PEOPLE WORK SIDE-BY-SIDE ADULTS ON OUR BOARD OF DIRECTORS, STAFF, AND VOLUNTEERS. YWP HAS A FULL-TIME STAFF OF 6 ADULTS, 255 YOUTH, AND A BUDGET OF $750,000. BASED IN WASHINGTON, DC, YWP PROGRAMS ENGAGE UNDER-RESOURCED YOUTH OF COLOR, AGES 14-24, WITH A FOCUS ON TEEN WOMEN, YOUTH IN FOSTER CARE AND OTHER SYSTEMS, AND HOMELESS YOUTH.

PEER HEALTH AND SEXUALITY EDUCATION PROJECT (PHASE) WORKS TO IMPROVE DC TEENS' REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH AND REDUCE UNPLANNED PREGNANCY BY EXPANDING COMPREHENSIVE SEXUALITY EDUCATION, ENSURING ACCESS TO COMMUNITY AND SCHOOL BASED REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH CARE, AND ENGAGING YOUTH AS ADVOCATES. AS PART OF PHASE, TEEN LEAP (LINKAGES, LARCS, EDUCATION, AND PREVENTION) IS TRAINING AND SUPPORTING A CADRE OF 44 YOUTH EDUCATORS IN WARDS 7,8, AND 6 -- WHO WILL USE ONE-TO-ONE EDUCATION, REFERRALS, AND SOCIAL MEDIA TO CONNECT YOUTH TO MEDICAL HOMES, INCREASE ACCESS TO SEXUAL HEALTH SERVICES INCLUDING LARCS. TEEN (AGES 14-18) LEAP EDUCATORS WILL COLLECTIVELY REACH 8,000 PEERS WITH ONE-ON-ONE SEXUAL HEALTH EDUCATION, REFER MORE THAN 1,800 YOUTH TO SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY BASED CLINICS RESULTING IN 336 LARC REFERRALS, DISTRIBUTE 40,000 CONDOMS, AND REACH 4,000 ADDITIONAL YOUTH THROUGH SOCIAL MEDIA. YOUTH EDUCATORS WILL ALSO ASSESS CLINIC SERVICES AND PROVIDE FEEDBACK AND SUPPORT TO CLINIC STAFF. YOUNG ADULT LEAP EDUCATORS (19-24) WILL ENGAGE YOUNG ADULTS WHO ARE IN OR RECENTLY EMANCIPATED FROM FOSTER CARE OR REHABILITATIVE SYSTEMS, AND YOUNG ADULTS EXPERIENCING HOUSING INSTABILITY.
