About this organization
Mission
Gifts for the Homeless, Inc. ("GFTH") is an all-volunteer nonprofit organization founded and staffed by volunteers from the Washington, D.C. area legal community. The mission of GFTH is to provide essential clothing items and blankets to homeless men, women and children in the DC metro area. In support of its mission, GFTH runs the largest used clothing drive in the DC metro area each winter. GFTH collects and sorts 3,000-4,000 bags of good used clothing, and distributes the items to 75+ homeless shelters, soup kitchens, and transitional housing facilities. GFTH also purchases and distributes 120,000 articles of new essential winter clothing and blankets to these homeless support organizations.
About
Used Clothing Drive: Beginning in October, area law firms, corporations, and other entities with ties to the Washington, DC legal community ask their employees to donate used clothing, blankets, toiletries, and related items and to make monetary contributions for the purchase of new clothing and blankets. Other individuals in the community who are not associated with these organizations or the legal community also provide donations for the purchase of new clothing and blankets. Each participating entity collects used clothing, toiletries, blankets, and related items during the first weekend of December. Volunteers sort these donated items and assist in delivering these items to homeless support organizations in the Washington DC area. The entire process occurs during a three-day weekend.
