Mission

Our mission is to use the law to make justice a reality for our neighbors who struggle with homelessness and poverty. Combining community lawyering and advocacy to achieve our clients' goals, our expert staff and network of volunteer attorneys provide low barrier, comprehensive legal services at intake sites throughout the District of Columbia, helping our clients to access housing, shelter, and life-saving services. Rooted in the experiences of this client work, we effectively blend system reform efforts, policy advocacy, community education and client engagement to advocate for long term improvements in local and federal programs that serve the low- and no-income community.

About

Legal Assistance - The Legal Clinic through staff attorneys as well as volunteer lawyers and paralegals provided low-barrier, high quality, pro bono legal help for people experiencing homelessness and housing insecurity. In 2019, we conducted 234 community intake sessions where our volunteer attorneys met with more than 445 clients. Our staff attorneys assisted an additional 278 clients. Overall, 160 cases were related to shelter issues (a number of which focused on securing access to shelter for families who had been unlawfully denied admission to this life-saving resource); 128 cases involved housing issues (often related to short- and long-term housing subsidies), and 116 involved cash benefits (including disability benefits and SNAP). The remainder was a mix of civil issues that included consumer matters, discrimination, disability rights, police conduct, identification and more.In addition, the Legal Clinic leveraged $2.9 million in pro-bono legal services from DC law firms and lawyers to provide services to clients though our Legal Assistance Project.
