About

Beth and David Geduld Program on Arab Politics: The Washington Institute's program on Arab politics focuses on social, political, and economic developments in the Arab world, a geographic area stretching from North Africa to Iraq, with the exception of the Gulf States (which are included in the Institute's program on Gulf and Energy). In 2018, the focus of the program was increasingly split between Syria, as the country's long civil war ground on, and Iraq, as the coalition fight against ISIS came to a turning point and the country went to national elections which marked an important step away from sectarian-based politics. Scholars in the program also wrote extensively this year about developments in North Africa-especially Libya and Egypt. The program was directed by David Schenker and supported by numerous senior fellows, visiting fellows and associates. In 2018, scholars in the Arab politics program testified several times before Congress and were cited by the media over 905 times and appeared in media interviews over 255 times. The Institute published and distributed 80 articles by program scholars and those scholars had a further 62 articles in newspapers, scholarly journals and online publications. This program held 14 policy forums and numerous in-house roundtables.
