Mission

To help New Yorkers – especially those in low-income areas – come together and improve the quality of life in their neighborhoods. Residents are uniquely situated to define and act on the issues affecting their communities. When provided with modest support, neighborhood and school groups can effectively mobilize community resources to improve quality of life. CCNYC supports these grassroots efforts by offering grants, skills-building workshops and further technical support in the form of project planning assistance and an equipment share library. In 2018, we provided 523 projects with $2.1 million in grants and services, and our staff facilitated 30 workshops. Since 1975, we have promoted the spirit of volunteerism, local engagement and social justice that drives our work.

About

Citizens Committee for New York City's mission is to help New Yorkers - especially those in low-income areas - come together and improve the quality of life in their neighborhoods. In 2019, we awarded micro-grants and project assistance to almost 625 grassroots neighborhood projects, mobilizing more than 15,892 residents as volunteers across all five boroughs and investing over $2.3 million in grants and services to improve quality of life in New York City. We conducted 22 skills-building workshops for 467 developing community organizers and 26 information sessions for potential local leaders. Citizens Committee's philosophy is to support disadvantaged New Yorkers based on self-identified needs in their communities, using local knowledge and resources. We empower passionate New Yorkers to make a difference through neighborhood projects, from building rainwater catchment systems in community gardens and stewarding street trees, to leading after-school dance programs and painting murals, to teaching immigrant parents how to navigate the city school system, to launching street fairs to counter gun violence, and so much more. Our mission celebrates the opportunities, education, culture, and diversity that make New York City the greatest in the world, while also ensuring that it is cleaner, safer, and fairer for the most disadvantaged residents. Citizens Committee achieves this work with micro-grants to resident-led community groups throughout the five boroughs of New York City, focusing on low-to-moderate income and under-served neighborhoods. We supplement this financial support with free project planning assistance and consultation, skills-building workshops, networking opportunities, and a tool lending library. Because many of these groups are too small to be officially registered 501(c)(3) non-profits, Citizens Committee is one of the few places they can turn to for support. Citizens Committee was founded by Senator Jacob Javits and "Newsweek" Editor-in-Chief, Osborn Elliott in 1975 to encourage New Yorkers to volunteer their time to help get the city through the fiscal crisis. Our strength at Citizens Committee is our unparalleled connection to active groups in every corner of the city. We know them and we also know that with just a little support, they can do so much to enrich their communities. As new crises arise, these resident-led groups are able to respond quickly and flexibly to meet unique neighborhood needs.
