Accomplishments
- The lgbt asylum project reaches underrepresented, marginalized communities who would otherwise be unable to access high-quality legal support and representation. one hundred (100) percent of clients identify as lgbtqia, 89 percent are people of color, and 25 percent are living with hiv/aids. clients are 92 percent male and eight percent female. of these, four percent are transgender - two percent ftm and two percent mtf. our clients originate from countries that are known for extreme and violent persecution of lgbt communities. in 2018, the lgbt asylum project had 58 cases with a 100 percent success rate for closed cases. in addition, we provided free legal consultations and information about the u.s. asylum process to over 780 lgbt individuals, including the 58 clients that were enrolled in asylum project legal services. this included 498 email requests, 56 facebook messages, 108 contacts via our webpage and 69 encounters at our monthly drop-in clinic.
