About this organization
Mission
In June of 2015, after a scourge of opioid overdoses in the City of Gloucester, the Gloucester Police Department announced a new plan to help people suffering with the disease of opioid addiction access treatment. Under this plan, the Gloucester Police Department would not charge any person afflicted with the disease of addiction if the person presented themselves to the police department and asked for treatment. The police promised to help every individual who came into the station, regardless of their city of residence and their insurance status. The program was immediately successful and the Police Assisted Addiction and Recovery Initiative (PAARI) was founded as a 501(c)3 nonprofit by former Gloucester Police Chief Campanello and businessperson John Rosenthal to help support the Gloucester Angel Initiative and to create other law enforcement based programs like it. Our mission is to support law enforcement based initiatives that create programs and entry points into opioid addiction treatment and recovery programs and to provide grants and other aid to police departments to implement similar initiatives; to foster a dialogue around the unique opportunity for police departments to take direct action against the disease of drug addiction and associated crime in their communities; to help change state and national policy around opioid addiction treatment; and to directly assist persons suffering with addiction who are in recovery through law enforcement based programs.
