Mission
The Front Porch (TFP) is a non-profit community music school in Charlottesville, Virginia that offers lessons, jams, dances, and performances to people of all ages. Out mission is to connect everyone through music. Teaching artists provide private and group lessons in a variety of styles, including blues, folk, old time, bluegrass, jazz, rock, and traditional world music. Our listening room venue seats 100 people for intimate concerts, and we also host off-site concerts for larger crowds. Beginning in the founder’s living room in 2015 with 30 students, TFP is now in two locations in Charlottesville, hosts over 350 weekly students, and serves more than 15,000 people per year.

PROVIDE MUSIC EDUCATION AND DANCE INSTRUCTION IN THE FOLK ARTS OF APPALACHIA AND CENTRAL VIRGINIA, THE FRONT PORCH PROVIDES INDIVIDUAL AND GROUP INSTRUCTION TO ALL AGES IN A VARIETY OF CLASSES INCLUDING OLD TIME MUSIC ENSEMBLE, AFRICAN DRUMMING, FOLK DANCING, BLUEGRASS ENSEMBLE, SONGWRITING, INTRO TO FIDDLE, BANJO, GUITAR AND UKULELE, PRIVATE INSTRUCTION WAS OFFERED IN GUITAR, UKULELE, BANJO, DULCIMER, FIDDLE, AND MANDOLIN. APPROXIMATELY 250 STUDENTS RANGING IN AGE FROM 6 TO 79 PARTICIPATED IN CLASSES TAUGHT BY 20 INSTRUCTORS WHO ARE RESPECTED PROFESSIONAL MUSICIANS IN THE COMMUNITY. OVER 1500 PRIVATE AND GROUP LESSONS WERE TAUGHT TROUGHOUT 2016. THE FRONT PORCH ALSO EMPLOYS AN ADMINISTRATOR TASKED WITH OVERSEEING THE SCHEDULING ASPECTS OF THE ORGANIZATION AND A PART TIME FRONT DESK ASSISTANT.
