About

The Coralville Community Food Pantry exists to ensure that every child and adult in our community goes to bed with the food they need and deserve. Through our innovative food-based programs, we strive to build a stronger, healthier, and hunger-free community. We are a small but mighty organization with just 3 paid staff, but powered by 150 plus volunteers. With the support of our community, we provide access to vital sustenance and personal care items for more than 3,000 Coralville and Tiffin residents every year. We distribute nutritious groceries on a weekly basis, provide extra food to families with children when school is not in session, share nourishing food through free community meals, equip our neighbors with tools to grow their own food, and connect people facing diet-related health conditions to fresh produce grown at local farms. Our primary method for meeting the food needs of our community is through our client-choice Food Assistance Program. This program utilizes an innovative client-choice model in which food insecure families and individuals can visit the pantry once a week to freely select food and personal care items that best suit their unique needs. We offer a vast array of food items that include nutrient-rich fresh produce, vegetables, meat, dairy, and eggs. The average household visits twice a month and selects 41 pounds of food per visit. In 2019, this program provided 411,205 pounds of nourishing food for 3,328 Coralville residents. The level of food security among our clients varies, many chronically struggle to get the food they need, while some encounter hunger temporarily. A majority (64 percent) of households visit us two or more times each month, while 30% visit at least once a month, and 6% visit less than 6 times a year. 71% of our client households say they receive half or more of their monthly food supply from the food pantry. Additionally, in 2019, we provided 24,670 meal equivalents to local school-aged children through our School Break Nutrition Program, served 1,600 community members through 4 Free Community Meals, and distributed 1,200 seed packets through our Seed Library Program. We rely heavily on in-kind support, in the form of food and volunteerism, to fulfill our mission of providing hope and nourishment for the community. In 2019, more than 1 million worth of food was donated from various community partners and individuals. In 2019, 167 regular volunteers and 22 one-time volunteer groups logged 9,198 service hours.
